Re: Overspray’s Custom Gravity Feed Single Pan

Already at it today. Uprights tacked in, top set on. I’ll need to massage it some before tacking the top frame on. Starting to look like a smoker a little more everyday! Re: Overspray’s Custom Gravity Feed Single Pan

Apparently I’m doing something wrong with the pics. Any advice on how to get them showing properly?

Re: Overspray’s Custom Gravity Feed Single Pan

A little more progress today. Shaped out the extended lower frame, with flush firebox door. You can see the 1/8” shims I’m using as spacers for the gap and gasket spacing. I’ll burn it together tomorrow and hopefully join the top and bottom by the end of the week. 39D6A143-027A-4390-93F2-B5AEB85BB05...

Re: High build primers

Usually, no. They’re generally NOT rated for direct to metal. NEXA is PPG’s euro line. They have two primers, one of which I have actually sprayed. 565-3800 is a general purpose 2k primer, says it’s direct to metal. It only shows prep for steel as sanded with 80-150grit paper, not blasted. P580-4501...

Re: Overspray’s Custom Gravity Feed Single Pan

Got a little more done. Fully welded, and due to my lack of patience and not pre planning for it, it warped of course. Pushed it back out and it’ll work for now. Due to the flush door, and the way I have it designed, the cross bar that’s usually flush with the lid interferes, so I welded it in under...

Re: Overspray’s Custom Gravity Feed Single Pan

Not much to speak of this week but made a little headway. Got the top section all cut out, chute door placement and gaps look nice. Insulated the tubes and fully welding What’s here as we speak. I should be able to get the bottom done next week and probably weld in the upright supports. We’ll see! A...

Re: Shielding gas or not?

IMO, it would be worth the $100. Flux core will glue it together, but using shielding gas will get you cleaner welds with less hassle.

Overspray’s Custom Gravity Feed Single Pan

Hey guys, I guess I’ll start my build thread here. First, I’m be building a Single Pan GF setup. It will be somehwhat unconventional, and have an automotive style to it. The overall height and CC will be extended 6” taller, to accommodate an extra shelf, the exhaust will be exiting the side instead ...

Re: Changes to the plans

I laid it all out in scale and it will work just fine. Also planning on a couple other odds and ends because I’m slightly OCD. I know it needs “rain curbs” but this smoker will likely never see elements, so the doors will be flush. If it does get wet, I have a plan for that as well. Next question ab...

Re: High build primers

Dirtytires - if youre fine with traditional black, there’s probably cheaper ways to go. If you’d want to use that epoxy primer, any automotive basecoat/clearcoat would works.

Diggerg - that’s a nice looking color. I’d go with the black primer (it’s more of a dark gray anyways).

Re: High build primers

I’d recommend using PPG CRE-921 (Black) or CRE-321 (Gray). These epoxy primers are specified to go over blasted metal and adhere excellent. They’re thick and can easily be surfaced for basecoat. They can also handle up to 300deg if you’re using it on an insulated smoker.

Re: What’s happened to the painting section?

From my limited research, there are paints that can withstand the temps, and are cured with a catalyst. Cost is pretty prohibitive though. It all depends on how “professional” you want to get.

Changes to the plans

Hey guys, I’ll park my general questions for my build mods here. I’m starting a single pan mini build shortly.I wanted the double pan, but I’m not quite ready to commit to that yet, hence the mini build. Although, I’d like to get a little more room in the mini. As far as I’ve read, I can increase th...

Hey guys, new around these parts. I’m a professional painter by trade, and a bit handy with a welder and a grill. I figured I’d spend some time putting together a smoker or two to get into this hobby a little deeper. I take great pride in building things for myself. I bought the double pan plans fir...
