Re: Design using the pit calculator questions

I’m resurrecting this thread because I think I might actually get to build my smoker soon. I am going back to the drawing board in terms of design, and doing away with the canted rectangle due to the reduction in useable space created by the angled walls, and instead building the same dimensions as ...

Re: Rednecking it up for a smoked Christmas turkey

Actually worked really well- better than I expected. Once the blocks are preheated I was able to hold 250F easily. Finished in the oven at 350 to get temp and crisp up the skin. At least I have something to do BBQ on until I can build my smoker. Waiting on friend to acquire steel for the project. Wi...

Rednecking it up for a smoked Christmas turkey

I have an old pellet smoker that kept having fire in the pellet hopper, so it for replaced by propane. (Side note: I think the problem was actually a grate on the exhaust stack that got clogged, silly me) I still want to smoke my turkey so I had to improvise. Using the pellet smoker and a grinder, I...

Re: Lamb

I've cooked lamb on the grill and in the oven. I treat it like a piece of lean beef in that - either keep it below 145 or braise it and get it really well cooked. Personally I sear the outside all over in a skillet, then cover with softened butter, salt, pepper, maybe a few red pepper flakes and the...

I think you can smoke the cheese and then just make the cheese sauce with that and have all the flavor.

Re: Design using the pit calculator questions

Also, you’ll want your drain to come from your BP through the bottom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I don't understand what you mean. As of now it'll be below the baffle plate opening and lower than the throat opening. Lots of folks, myself included, put a dam at the gap end of the BP to keep ...

Re: Design using the pit calculator questions

For the baffle plate gap, the maximum gap should be the size of my throat with the ability to choke it down for tuning, right? (See picture)

Re: Design using the pit calculator questions

I put the drain in the design for easy cleaning with a hose. I just want to minimize the drippings hitting the BP and inside the chamber to reduce cleaning. I think I'm going to use some aluminum cookie sheets to cover the BP instead. They're cheap and they fit in a standard dishwasher for easy clea...

A 90° in the stack is fine. Remember to measure stack height from the top of your CC.

Re: Design using the pit calculator questions

You’re on the right track. You’ll find fire size will be a lot smaller than you might assume. The larger the FB, the more airflow you’ll need to get clean burns and good heat distribution and the harder it will be to get consistent temps. Too small and you end up trying to build a bigger fire to ge...

Re: Design using the pit calculator questions

The grate has no effect on the firebox dimensions. So even though the grate will reduce the amount of space that I can use to build fire, that reduced space doesn't affect anything? Therefore the firebox is more for proper flow and limiting combustion than amount of fire you can build? Am I getting...

Design using the pit calculator questions

Hey guys I joined here a while ago and still haven't built my smoker. Life happens. I wore out my cheap grill with a side box, then acquired a pellet smoker which started having fires in the pellet hopper, so that was replaced with a propane grill. My wife loved the convenience of the pellet grill s...

I am also interested. My dad is on a quest to recreate the bacon his dad made as a kid and can't find a producer that puts enough smoke on it without the salt.

CC of 24x24x36 with a fire box of 18x24x16. 3/16 for the CC, 1/4 fire box. 2x2 angle for frame.

Center of gravity/balance

Is there a way I can calculate the balance center on a smoker so that I can install the wheels close to that point, making it much easier to lift and roll?

Re: How to build/seal the door?

Once you cut out the hole for the door, most people reuse the cut-out piece to use as the door. The easiest way is to use 2 inch wide flat bar (most use same thickness as the door material but doesn’t need to be) to weld around the piece to make a flange. The gasket goes under this flange and seals...

How to build/seal the door?

I am pretty decided on building a smoker. 36x24x24 cook chamber, 16x24x18 fire box. I will have the loading door on the front (16x18) face of the fire box and the vents on the 24x18 side. I am going to order pieces already cut to size ie 24x36(4), 24x24(2), 16x18(2),16x24(2),18x24(2). Should I order...

You will be much happier with a dedicated smoker and a separate grill
That's the conclusion I keep arriving at. My limited deck space means a vertical is probably my best option. Makes getting material easier too. I can order the sheets in the size I want.

What are you considering? Maybe we can help to steer you in the right direction. I currently have a cheap grill with an offset box that can get the job done with some baffles out of aluminum chafing dish. But it functions plenty well as a charcoal grill. I want what I have, except better function a...

Hey guys. I arrived here after seeing a build for sale on CL saying they got plans from here.

I'm considering building a smoker to get what I want, but I'm not committed one way or the other.

Re: Cutting straight with angle grinder

IS there a trick or tips to cut perfectly straight with an angle grinder? My last build many of the cuts weren't perfectly straight. Should i use a metal ruler of plate to use as a guide? Iron worker here. Mark your lines with soap stone or bright paint marker. Clamp a straight edge a couple inches...
