Re: PID Controller Parts

All the probes I've worked with (Maverick & Guru) burn out between 400 & 500F - practical experience. The computer flips to "HH" to indicate over-temp at about 411F on a Maverick if memory serves. If you're concerned about overshoot then you need a check valve in the air line between the fan and the...

Directly attached would be better. But make sure the total area of the throat opening is at least as big as the pit calc recommends.

Re: Help with my first smoker .please...".

Your 3 - 4" connector idea scares me. You will lose nearly all your radiant heat transfer from the FB to the CC and you have created (albeit inadvertently) a "radiator" between the FB and CC that will lose more heat through the walls of the 4" pipe than a direct connection would have. You might find...

Puff I call that "smoke water" Harmless but annoying if it gets on the paint job. Just wipe it up and make sure the location it's dripping on is well sealed to prevent rust….. :D

Re: Wood for a turkey

Mulberry is good. But it doesn't burn as hot as other woods I've tried - supplement it with a touch of briquettes and you'll be fine. At my age I can't remember exactly what the drawback to crab apple was but there was something people didn't like about it - haven't used it personally but you might ...

Re: Help with my first smoker .please...".

I think these guys have covered it all but I would make one suggestion. Put rails in at 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 of the distance up from the main grate to the roof NOW - much easier before you season the CC to get them installed. Only make 2 grates for now - main and top. Round CC's mean the higher grates get ...

Re: Wood for a turkey

I think MTF is right - go with the oak first time around. noXcuse is spoiled and probably doesn't even know it. The fruitier woods seem to be the best for BBQing birds so try to get your hands on some apple. Usually isn't too hard to find - especially if you call an orchard this time of year - they'...

Re: geometry of the cc door

A lot of guys will add 1 inch to the 12 o'clock position and the 3 o'clock position (top and bottom).
They claim better rain runoff on the top and an easier main grate clearance on the bottom. :D

Re: Sand

I wouldn't add to the FB size to fit the fire brick into place. Once the fire brick get hot they will contribute heat stabilization to the overall cubic inches of the FB so changing the FB size would not be necessary. Just make sure your basket/ash pan etc will clear. :D

Re: Sand

I think if you check (laser) all 6 walls of any FB you'll discover the least amount of heat collects on the floor. Any attempt to insulate the floor will only effect a very small percentage of the FB total heat loss. Sand is cheap but the labor to maintain it isn't …. fire brick would do the same th...

Sounds good - very similar to what I did on Edgar.

Make sure the total gap area from the FB to the shadow plate (height X perimeter of the shadow plate) is at least as large as the calculator's recommended throat opening. :D
