Convection Blower/fan

Post by Mettle » November 25th, 2012, 1:59 pm

Several big name pits have them, Has any one tried one in a GF smoker?

Can anyone explain how they do not affect the fire?

I dont have mine installed yet, but I plan to.

They dont do anything to the fire.

They simply stir the air, that way there is no hot spots, in theory that is.

I plan to use a small fan motor with a tiny chain and sprocket to a shaft that enters the cook chamber.

That way there is no heat trans to the actual motor.

They only circulate the air in the cook chamber.

Yeah, I get the concept. Just a little afraid that without forced induction that it could affect the draft.

If others are pulling it off, I will too.

Like the idea of the chain drive. That would have been my follow up question.

Thanks Guys.

Frank and I have talked about it several times, and concur that the direct conection to the motor could be a bad thing in theory.

I have personally seen it be a bad thing on Jethro's rotisirator. Poor little thing gets hot, not exactly the same since his in above the firebox, but its the same principal.

I was thinking about tearing apart one of the kids bikes for the chain and sprockets.

So what kind of temps can the convection motors handle? I was always of the impression that the fan motors were inside the ovens so I had it in my head that heat would not come into play. This is one of those add ons I had back in my mind, as always its a good thing there are thinking folks on this site or else I might have wasted boocoo money.

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

In some commercial ovens I previously owned, we cooked certain things at 450 degrees. Never had 1 problem with them.

I've thought of trying a little convection action on a smoker so I've been lurking here and learning some things but ... you guys are losing me ... I don't think all motors are created equal .... like melt-able parts? I've seen nylon holders for the brushes and FRP end bells with press fit bearings in them etc.... or maybe I'm thinking of something completely different ... :-B

Check this out, it may be the missing link you need to envision this. You might notice that one is a fairly powerful draft and convection blower. With the right electronics, that would be the cat's pajamas.

On an insulated cabinet, no fears of melting.

Editted to add:

If you chose one of these types of fans (originally meant to force air into a room) you could vary the voltage to vary CFM. Mount it to a piece of square tubing and move it away from the heat of the smoker.

I would make a mount it on the outside of a clone (insulated) and just have a squarish plug/blockoff plate if I ever wanted to dismount it.

I dont know either. But I am gonna try a convection fan on the Franktisserie. Well if I ever get that far. I think we were planning to do the ducted thing tho. Maybe OB1 can recall. That was too many grey hairs ago! :ymsigh:

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Sorry, just now getting to this thread. We were going to put one in but we are still in the design stages. We were thinking of ducting it in to get more directional convection. More like a commercial convection oven
