High build primers

Talk about what kind of paint is used on smokers and how to apply it.

High build primers

Post by Diggerg » March 11th, 2019, 3:39 pm

So once I've built my GF I plan on blasting it at work in our blast room. I'll be usng recycled iron silicate so it'll be clean but with a little surface profile. Has anyone used a high build automotive primer before basecoatng.

I’d recommend using PPG CRE-921 (Black) or CRE-321 (Gray). These epoxy primers are specified to go over blasted metal and adhere excellent. They’re thick and can easily be surfaced for basecoat. They can also handle up to 300deg if you’re using it on an insulated smoker.

Bump——

Sorry but I’m still in the same boat. Once primered, do you have a recommendation on topcoat? I’m fine with traditional black.

Thanks. Yes it's an insulated smoker. I plan on using this as a topcoat.
Ebay item 192344686451 with a clear coat over the top. Would you recommend black or gray as the primer for this type of colour?

Dirtytires - if youre fine with traditional black, there’s probably cheaper ways to go. If you’d want to use that epoxy primer, any automotive basecoat/clearcoat would works.

Diggerg - that’s a nice looking color. I’d go with the black primer (it’s more of a dark gray anyways).

I like it. It looks black from a distance but has that wow up close

I'm in the UK and can't seem to get PPG paint. Would a standard 2 pack high build do?

Usually, no. They’re generally NOT rated for direct to metal.

NEXA is PPG’s euro line. They have two primers, one of which I have actually sprayed.

565-3800 is a general purpose 2k primer, says it’s direct to metal. It only shows prep for steel as sanded with 80-150grit paper, not blasted.

P580-4501(White)/4505(Gray)/4510(Beige) is a high build 2k epoxy primer rated for application over blasted metal. However, I’m unsure if it can be purchased in gallons.

Neither of these had temp ratings on their data sheets, but I’d assume both would be fine on an insulated smoker. Hope this helps!

I think around the firebox exceeds 300F. You may consider installing a piece of aluminum diamond plate around that area

We use Sherwin Williams L425 2k epoxy primer at work but I can't find anything about temp resistance

You could also just tape off a few inches (cm?) from the firebox and just use high temp paint in that area. I’d probably do that even if you’re going to cover it in aluminum.

Sounds like a good idea. I plan on putting an aluminium surround on.
