Insulated cabinet build

Post by SOILhunter » May 9th, 2014, 8:42 pm

Hey guys long time no post here for me...mostly on the FB group here lately. Figured I better throw something up for you guys that aren't on FB.

I've been having to borrow a cooker anytime I needed to do more than 6 butts so I decided it was time to build something I could load up with a ton of meat!

46T"x34W"x26D" external, frame is 14ga 1x2 box tubing. All inside walls are 16ga and the outside is 18ga. 2" mineral wool insulation on the sides, top, bottom and the door....back wall and the small front section got 1". Going to be running one of the 12" pellet drives that Frank offers. Any questions just ask!

Biscuit test...bottom on the back wall seemed to be a little hotter but I really hadn't let it even out just fired it up and threw them in.

Also got it's first run of meat today...country style ribs, chicken quarters, bacon wrapped pork loin, bacon wrapped asparagus, salmon, some boneless thighs and some plain ole BACON! Everything turned out great and ran well..no complaints from me.

Excellent... That really does look great. I started my first cut Labor Day weekend 2013... It still needs paint and I'm still lighting fires in it to check temps. !! Nice work.

Make no mistake, there ain't no powder in this Puff ! And... I'm not really a crazy person but I play one in real life

I'm looking to do a pellet fired cabinet build with 1 1/2" thick Roxul and I was wondering if on the inside of the walls where the insulation is going to be stationed is really important that it be welded on the inside of the opening where the insulation is or just completely welded all around inside of the cook chamber. First build and trying to retrieve some info before we dive into this. Thanks.

Others will offer there thoughts as well. But I sleeve all openings and make sure that no moisture can make its way to the insulation.

So basically I would seal all joints. Some are welds some are silicon.

Ok, when you say sleeve are you talking about some bent metal capping off the front of the cabinet on both sides and top and bottom. Thanks

Insulated cabinet build

Post by Tom_Heath » January 15th, 2015, 7:45 pm

No no. Sleve was correct. For the stack I cut a 5 in diameter hole then insert a short piece of pipe. Then weld it to the skin on both the inside and out side.

Where the inner skin roof sits inside the inner walls I would use
Rtv and assemble and weld in say 4 spots. Letting the silicon makes the seal. Same for where inter walls rest inside the floor pan.

You build sheet metal outer skin just like shingles. Make it so water runs off. Not in.

Inner skin is like reverse shingles.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll get with you before we start the build and go over some of the basics about skinning later. Thanks.

Hang in there man, I am still working on the measurements for ya.

My old gray cooker has been sold but I happen to know where its at. And I will get ahold of a guy that can get us the measurements. My brother in law has the blue one and I may just have to go by his house and take a tape measure. He works worse hours then I do.
