Firebox size

Post by MattJ » July 24th, 2018, 12:05 pm

I am refurbishing a unit for a coworker and had to make a change to the size of the back of the raised cabinet. I straightened the back and top is wider than original calculations. Now my firebox of 115% is 99.5% based on actual measurements.

I see everyone usually recommends a firebox slightly oversized. Will there be issues if it is left at 99.5% of recommended?

By the way firefox is insulated. I haven't built firebox door yet.Image

I had the same issue when I decided to add cabinet doors to my smoker. Prior to the cabinet doors, my FB was around 105%. After adding doors, it was around 97%. The general consensus from this gang was that it was best to enlarge the Firebox. So I followed the advice and enlarged it to around 110%. Now, my unit runs like an absolute dream. You've already done a substantial amount of work, might as well make it as perfect as possible. Just my two cents. The others will probably know better than I.

What is your set up for the WC, just a WC or is there an opening from the FB ?

It has an opening from the firebox that can be closed like the MACK

I think we would all like to see i a bit bigger but an insulated firebox is a pretty big task to enlarge. The insulation will help prevent heat loss and allow you to get away with a slightly smaller firebox. I would spend the extra effort in insulating the door as well. I think you will be fine but you could always cut down the cookchamber a bit down the road if needed with a false panel.

If you're sure that it's 99.5% then what you have should work fine seeing as it's insulated. Normally we try to oversize the FB just to have a little bit extra if needed but you won't have a lot of heat loss so it's probably close enough. Did you use Pete's calculator to figure the volume of the CC ?

Yes I used Pete's calculator before and after. If I knew he wanted the racks the same size up front I wouldn't have this to worry about.

Thanks guys for your advice.
