Great work! Has me convinced that my next build(and hell, I'm not even done with my first! :) ) will be a pipe based, rather than tank based smoker. I like the flexibility to having open ends until they need to be closed up.

Pipe definitely makes it easier to build.

I made some progress in the last few days. The firebox is framed out, insulated and covered up. The chimney is placed, shadow plate installed and the whole thing mounted on the cart.

As an added bonus my brother-in-law came out today and tried out welding for the first time...he got to grind some too!ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

I did get the door hinges fabbed up and welded to the door. I have some finishing work to do on the hinges but they're pretty much done. ImageImageImageImage

Hah! That's my nephew working on his derby car. It's a pretty common look for him!

The last couple days have been fruitful. I was able to get the cook rack, fire basket, handle, door stop and end plate welded on. I have the firebox door tacked together so all it will need is some grinding/sanding to finish up and it will be ready to be installed. ImageImageImageImageImageImage

For a budget build it sure looks sturdy. Nice job.

Funny you say that...I got the steel bill and suddenly it wasn't as 'budget' as I thought it would be. I think I still ended up spending $550 on steel, another $50 on sandblasting and put at least 10 lbs of wire in it. Throw in the grinding wheels, flap disks and casters and there's $750 stuck into it.

Funny how the bottom line creeps up on you. You set a cap for the build then blow it all outta whack within the first month.

I put the finishing touches on it and sent it home with my brother-in-law today.

I built the door latch, installed handles on the cook grate, welded brackets for the front handle, installed a shelf for the temp monitor, welded a chain link under the firebox so he had a place to hook his trailer winch and did a little customization for the chimney. He named it Puff and wanted the name welded to it...

He did come out last night and fired it up to season it. He had it warmed up just over 300° in about an hour. He closed to vents completely and went home after a couple hours. When I opened up the firebox this morning I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it shut the fire down. Image

It got its 1st cook on Saturday and my brother-in-law finished painting it yesterday. He did a fantastic job on the paint scheme.

I do have a couple tweaks to make. The shadow plate was more effective than I planned so it needs to be trimmed back about 4". Right now the hot side is opposite the firebox about 15-20°. The fire basket grate is a bit too wide and too many coals drop these I'll want to tighten that up some. Other than that it is fantastic!

Great build. I finished a direct flow build a few months ago and now I already want to build a reverse flow. It’s like an addiction or something.

I see rattle cans on the table. What brand did you use? And what heat rating?

Very nice, I really like the diamond chimney. How have you found it with the chiney open all the way to the baffle plate?

Cheers Camo
