Trailer rig makeover

Post by Big T » March 16th, 2019, 8:48 pm

I built this cooker 6 years ago using materials from a friend of mines scrap pile. It has been a great cooker but it wasn’t exactly what I wanted so it was time for a rebuild. I was hoping to build a new trailer also but I have a wedding to cook for next weekend so it’ll have to wait till later. Image here’s what I started with. Image. Cut the old FB and stack off. Image My buddy Boudreaux started cutting it up. Image we built a new FB and WC with double openings and an insulated floor on the WC. Image. Got it mounted up and welded in place. Image installed the counter weight, stack and new handles. Image cut out the old axle, springs and mounting hardware and installed a 3500 lb set up. Image Image. Image. Slapped on some paint, gauges, L.E.D’s and some fresh rubber and she was ready to roll. I have to get it seasoned tomorrow and do a little testing so I can be ready for next weekend.

Haha thanks man! If it wasn't for my friend helping me and my wife putting up with all of the late nights, I don't know how long it would've taken.

Great update...nice addition. Looks really nice on the trailer as well.

How did the test burn go?

That has got to be the tallest counter weight I’ve seen. I’m thinking you should hang a banner off it.

Thanks fellas, it means a lot coming from guys that know the amount of work that it takes to build one of these. I'm putting it through it paces now and it's going better than I thought it would for the first test, I'm very happy so far. I knew it would perform well because I used the calculators but I thought there would be a learning curve with the double dampers but it responds very quickly to different adjustments.. DT the counter weight is about 4'' shorter than the outside edge of the fender so it doesn't cause any issues. I tried making it shorter but the door being 3/8'' thick was so heavy that it was hard to open for the first 6'' or so. When I first finished the counterweight I couldn't get over how tall it is but after a few days of looking at it, I started to like the look. It's also nice because my son likes to help me out with the cooking but before he couldn't open the door, now it isn't an issue.

I figured it was for a reason...and it has a cool look.

Glad it is holding temps for you. I made mine with the double dampers as well after some encouragement from Rodcrafter. Glad I put in the extra work as I use it quite a bit.

This joker runs like a dream! I didn’t cook anything but I managed to get it seasoned and make several adjustments to the dampers to see how it responded. I was super impressed with the versatility of the double damper system. I could match temps in the CC and WC or have them completely different with ease. I have a wedding to cook for next weekend so I’ll put it through it’s paces then. Here’s a few pictures from today Image. Image. Image. It doesn’t take much fuel to keep it dialed in. I can’t wait to load it down and see what happens.

How big are your pass-thrus from cc-warmer and from fb-warmer? Just looking to compare to mine....I used a 4 inch pipe but wonder sometimes if it should be bigger. However, it works like I want it to so will probably leave it alone.

DT, I made the opening from FB to WC 5'' x 5''- 25 total sq in. and CC to WC I made the same as the throat. Looking back, I don't think the CC to WC needs to be that big because I didn't have to open it all the way to even out the temps.
