Thanks everyone. I have decided to insulate the firebox now due to having to offset it down into the trailer frame. My welder friend is building me a trailer out of 2x4 rectangle tubing and I am worried about it burning the trailer wiring. Air inlets are actually going to be under the trailer. I plan on enlarging them from 2x14 to 3x14 and framing them with 2x1/4 flat bar with a butterfly assembly controlled from the end of the fire box via a rod that runs through the insulated wall.

Unless you are running your wire directly against the firebox I’m betting you would be ok. If still concerned, an easier option may be to run the back section of wire in a heat resistant loom or using a wire with a higher heat rating. Unless you have other reasons to insulate your firebox, I’d just change the wire.

Wire will all be inside the trailer frame tubing all concealed. It looks really slick. I have kicked insulation back and forth a hundred times
and I think at this point I would rather go ahead and do it than regret it later. And I am worried about it burning the paint off the trailer floor as well.

Thanks men. I appreciate all input. I am replacing a trailer pit I built 30 years ago that has finally reached the point of no return. This will be the last big pit I build more than likely. I really appreciate the ideas and opinions and take them seriously. Please respond with whatever your thoughts are I am sure there are things I miss or do not think about. I love this forum and all the knowledge.

ok Got to a point where I could build a fire. Just had to see one lol. No racks yet though. Two chimneys of lump and 5 splits to get a coal bed going. Never had a pit get to clear smoke so quick in my life. Hardly any dirty smoke at all. When time to add splits they ignited easily. Thermometers have not come in yet but using an IR temp gun on the door it was within 15 degrees or so end to end after 30 min or so. Only ran it an hour so I doubt it had even equalized yet. Ready to get her done now and season her up.

Ok had to do one cook before I send it out and have it attached to the trailer, blasted and painted. Did a brisket, pork butt, 3 slabs of ribs, 2 chickens and 10# of sausage. Pit ran really well. Maintained 10 degrees more or less end to end. It would even pretty well as splits burned down and drift a little when you would add a split. Sorry no plated pics.

Thanks guys for the kind words. A lot of thanks goes to Frank for well thought out and engineered plans and great customer service when it comes to questions. And also to all of y’all. I don’t post a lot but I read lots of posts and see others ideas and such. Avoided lots of pitfalls that way.

Now to get my double pan built so it can join the reverse flow on the trailer I think.
