Mack Fire Grate Height?

Post by dhafling » December 7th, 2020, 3:20 pm

I am building a Mack. I insulated and raised the bottom of the firebox for easier ash cleanup and the fact that this is sitting directly on the trailer. With that being said, should I still put the fire grate up 5 inches? That seems too high in my opinion. Any more experienced people have a thought? I think a 3 inch or 3.5 inch airflow under the fire grate is enough.

The allowable range is 2''-6'' but I prefer the 3.5''-4''. If it's too close the food will cook on the bottom faster than the top side and too far you lose the benefit of the radiant heat.

I think Big T nailed down the placement of the baffle plate and lower cooking rack and is spot-on, as always.

Concerning the clearance under the fire basket, I would agree that 3.5-4 inches is perfect. Remember to leave room for an ash pan if you so desire.

Haha, I've got to start paying closer attention when I've been drinking. Thanks for bailing me out DT
