SmokerBuilder Reverse Flow Plans - Sourcing 24" pipe

Post by EverydayDiesel » March 14th, 2021, 4:30 pm

Hello, I just bought the reverse flowplans from smoker builder and I am ready to build my first smoker. The plans call for a 24" pipe but I cannot find anyone who sells this (thats not 20ft in length). I have plenty of 1/4" plate steel on hand

Has anyone built the reverse flow on that site?
Where did you source your pipe?

I was at one of our local scrap yards a few days selling a bunch of my scrap that I had accumulated in the last few years. They sell all of their scrap pipe between .30c-.50c per pound. And scrap plate as well.
You might call around to some of the local recycling centers in your area and see if they sell some back to the public. Most around here only take scrap for recycling purposes. But we have a few that keep the salvageable scrap and sell back to the public.. might save some major coin that way..

Also, You might also try a mechanical contractor that has a pipe fitters shop. They would likely have some that that they could sell you. May be cheaper to get from them than buying a whole stick. Also a fab shop could roll you up a piece of plate to whatever size you want. Quotes are typically free. I work at a large mechanical shop that has a pipe fitters shop and an industrial sheet metal shop. Both departments carry that stuff and could do it. (Central CAlifornia) I am sure you could find the same resources in your parts too! Call around and get some quotes..

Texas Iron and Metal in Houston. That place is a smoker builder's dream. I got a 9 foot piece of 1/4" wall 24 inch for $30 a foot. Also got several pieces of 20 inch, 4 feet long, 1/4 wall for fireboxes..

I live on Hogaboom Road.

Yes. I built that exact same pit. Found a local pipe supply (not steel supply) yard that band-saw cut me a piece to exact length. New pipe so didn’t have to mess with cleaning out contamination or rust.

250 gallons propane tanks are usually 24" diameter. My local supplier sells old tanks.

that's a good price . A little less than .50c/lb.(.47c)
That's going rate for scrap sales in these parts here too. between .30c-.50c/lb..
24"x 1/4" wall weighs in at about 63.5 lbs/lf.

My bad. I was thinking 120 gallon. 30" is the norm. Coffee hadn't kicked in yet.

Honestly, a 30" cook chamber would be awesome. Could easily get 3 racks in it. I know it's an additional expense but they sell plans for that size pit as well. If you wanted to alter it a bit, you could always cut it down to 36-48 inches long to make it more back yard friendly.

This is interesting, especially since the guy sells 30" (250 gallons) for $50 less then the 24" (172 gallon)

No problem at all. It seems there are some 172 gallons floating around that have the 24" OD and 250 wall

You want to contact your local fabrication shops and see what they would want to roll it for you.
