If you've got the steel and just want lots of adjustment I think a good rule is about 3 inches at the closest and I have seen several designs at 4 inches separation. 3 inches will usually hold rib racks and chicken parts. 6 inches will usually hold brisket and smaller BB. 9 inches will hold most whole birds and the larger BB. fwiw.... :D

So if I build a shelf to fit in at 6 inches and another at 3 inchesthere should be room for 3 layers of ribs or wings, and form2 layers of 5 lb boneless butts pull out the middle shelf!!!!! I like thenwaynyou think! Off the pick up some more expanded metal for the middle shelf :-bd

Is that thing supposed to be smoking like that?

The one I just finished I measured to have rails for 2 tall shelves or 3 short ones. I was saving money and weight because it's portable and not that big to start with.... A big patio rig or a trailer-mounted one would be nicer with lots of rails for lots of flexibility.... imho ... :D

Been a while. I am getting closer to having it like I want it. Took it to some friends who did 800 butts for a fund raiser and we found out that it will run 11 of the 10lb butts at a time! They ran it for 36hrs straight and it did great!

So I was up at 6:45 this morning to get it going for today's Christmas Ham and Turkey!

Merry Christmas to you all.
