SMOKINWELDERS 250 GALLON TRAILER BUILD

Post by smokinwelder » January 3rd, 2013, 8:46 pm

Hey everyone. I just learned how to post photos.....i hope, thanks to Frank_Cox! So I decided to start a new build thread. I am picking up my tank tuesday. In the pics there is an exapmple on how they look. Should I pick one that has dirt on it, or a cleaner one? Maybe the ones with dirt have less rust? Let me know please. I spent $100 on the 250#der. I have lots of questions. Should I wire wheel my tank before I start and paint to keep rust from growing? Also I want to build a trailer. I would like to build the trailer first, and then build off the trailer, but dont know what kind of axle I need, and whatever axle you suggest, can i cut it down if needed? Once I obtain the axle, the build will begin! Well here goes nothing......

P.S. I want to thank everyone for being so supportive about my old thread on having a craigslist crab hunting me down over $200.....I have :rulz: You really make me feel welcome!

A sandblaster will be your best friend. Get one that has the least pitting. don't worry so much about the surface rust and dirt.

Cool, Ill do the best I can when picking her out. I need to come up with a name for my smoker....it will come.

How much weight will this trailer need to hold with tank, firebox, and aluminum toolbox? Can I buy a harbor freight trailer and beef it up? Lemme know.....thanks!

Im looking at Northern Tools 3500lb axle kit for $260. Not a bad deal. Im by no means rich, but I can make it happen in decent time. I could also go with a steel boat trailer used off craigslist. Not sure on the load the axle will handle though. the piece of mind would be nice with the 3500 pounder, and then I can build a frame around it. Id still need lights, tounge, and other small items. hmmmmm. what to do.....any suggestions? cheapest but efficient.

depending on the size you will need a trailer that can hold 1500 - 2000 lbs, I bought a trailer from harbor freight the largest they sell it is a 2000 lb gross weight trailer, on sale and with a coupon I got it for $275.00, I beefed it up with deck plate and some angle and welded the whole thing together total in the trailer is about $400.00 it turned out really nice for the price.

Having that freight company parking lot next door has been a real treasure for ya TQ. I gotta say though, those low rider trailers parked in the back are a bit weird looking from the road. :D

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

I think it would fit on them......and what you could do is back up to a tree or something solid at your house and then chain it to that item and the tank and then slowly drive off....

If you can't fix it by sheer force or cursing......then it can't be fixed.....

Oh man! tomm i pick up my 250 gallon tank at 830 am! even my boss is letting me go get it during work. When i get it home I really want to put it on something. I dont have ant steel stands or anything to hang it from. Hmmm maybe ill just put it on some dunnage/wood so i can wire wheel and paint it to keep rust from spreading while i build my trailer. any suggestions on something I can put it on to clean and paint? i know...i shouldnt paint it till im done, but i wont be working on it till the trailers done and i dont want it rusting outside. thanks, joe

If there's ANY rust or old paint on it now then leave it alone - it really won't change much in the time it takes to build the trailer - might as well just remove the rust once .... fwiw :)

Usually more beers than smoke.

Keep us posted on the progress of your build. I too am in the middle of a trailer build. I've been posting pics on the Smokebuilder Facebook page.
