What do you all think about taking just the bell end I cut off and welding it back to the CC..? The main reason I cut it off was becuase the original tank demensions were 63" long... and I wanted a 48" CC... I'm just thinking if I welded the dome back on it would have a more balanced look not to mention save a little money in steel plate what I would need to come up with on the FB side... Has anybody done this? I'm just thinking the only issue would be if the doesn't match up right on in circumference... ??? :-s

The great part is we can build anything we want.

If it works. then you are the Master.

If it fails,,, you are a professional grinder man, LOL

LOL well it worked out..More on the the master grinder side.. my welds aren't the pretiest but I got the job done... :welder: Made some more progress yesterday. My little Makita 4" angle grinder is getting one heck of a workout. I've been going through cutting wheels like crazy... I'm thinkin a plasma cutter would be cool if I build another one of these..(ya think) Hope to go down and buy the 1/4" plate for the FB and BP today..

Had a little too much gap on about a 12" section of the joint so I installed this little flange to back up the weld puddle and give it some support... Not sure if this is the "right" way to do it but it worked!

IMG_4453.jpg
Yep I'll be a master grinder by the time this build is done!

More pics from yesterday. I got some weld on bullet style hinges for the CC door.. Do you guys think these will work? Or should I use them on the FB door?

The door doesn't seem too heavy but.. I still think a cool counter weight is in order!

Bullet hinges are my favorite - they should work fine but you'll prolly want at least 3 for that weight of door - just guessing from the pic. Take your time to get some nice parallel lines on both the door and jamb so you can line up the hinges in "as close to the same line" as possible. If you're good the door will be removable for servicing/cleaning.

Thanks Rick! How are you guys working around the door seal with these hinges? I'm assuming you guys are building the CC side of the hinge then mounting the hinge directly to the door seal on the door side of the hinge?? I've been looking for a close up pic but haven't found one.

Found this the other day and looks like a good idea for making door flanges/seals..

I always build my door complete with flange etc. then paint the inside of the door only and silicone the firerope in place. This way you can lay the door in place (rotate the cooker or use cargo straps) so that gravity or the straps will slightly compress the firerope. Without moving anything weld the hinges to both the door and CC. NOW you've got a pre-gapped door/jamb arrangement that will properly seat when you close it. This process demands you have a door that has the correct curve first. Hope that helps... fwiw :D

Thanks again Rick! Very helpful.. So when you say "This process demands you have a door that has the correct curve first." you mean the door should not have an warpage or racking etc... I noticed my popped up a little in one corner when I was cutting it .. I used a cuttoff wheel to cut the door out..

Somebody on here showed a door laying over a floor jack with a chain around both so when you ran the jack up the chain tightened and curved the door more to reset it back to original radius .... clear as mud? Anyway they said it worked really well. Make the door curve match the tank again after cutting - otherwise your seal won't work near as well on the end edges of the jamb. :D

Began working on the baffle plate yesterday... My original measurements of 16-1/2" wide ended up being too narrow... so I decided on a piece of 2" channel and welded the drain pipe to in... I will then split my 1/4" down the middle and angle it toward the channel... hope it works!

Looking good LB!
Those welds and cuts look like they will work, and they say that is the key :D . Nothing the grinder can't perty up, trust me I buy flap disc by the dozens. #-o
Good thinking on the drain channel, make the supplies you have work! :points:
