Fire box is insulated so I am not expecting a lot of heat but a shield is a good idea any way thanks

Awesome on the truck. Looks to be rust free, thats a good thing.

And its got the Alcoa wheels. Love those wheels.

Did you get the shackles fixed , in one of the last pics you posted it looked like the shackle had flipped on ya.

wsiddoway that is some nice work - great progress for one day!

Here's the place I've bought tel-tru gauges and spring handles from. I think he's a little pricey but he always has them and they come right out when you order them... so that's worth something... :D

Keep up the great work (and the pics) :D

I get my spring handles from Harbour freight they are very cheap chipping hammers. That is a great build ,lends credence to the statement go big or go home. Did I see a National crane in the back of your shop Man that is cool. :LG:

Couldn't pass that up. :D
You have to admit they appear to be a nice size, and firm with no sagging.

The big twins 500+ 500 gallon tank build

Post by wsiddoway » March 3rd, 2013, 5:58 pm

Doors all trimmed out, counter balances installed need to add weight to keep door open, second baffle plate all welded out. Cook chamber doors now have handles. Weekends go way to fast. Full time job getting in the way of building the smoker, a problem I have yet to figure out the solution toImage
Ran short on 4" pipe for the last counter balance

I am having an internal debate . Smoke stacks what to do? I have 5" alumnium pipe when polished up looks great, but to get the right amount of air flow the stacks have to be 46" tall and there has to be two of them per tank. From floor to top of stacks would be over 10' and would require a bigger garage door to the shop I am going to build. Or stick to the 36"x 8" single stack that will be black. What to do? Has any one used alumnium for their smoke stacks? How does alumnium stand up to heat? Wil it change color due to the smoke?

I haven't used aluminum on a stack yet... I would think attaching the aluminum pipe to the CC would be a trick though...
Have you considered plug-in stacks? They aren't that hard to make if you've got the pipe. i.e. steel pipe the same gauge/O.D. as the aluminum pipe you want to use. Then you could weld that piece to the cooker ....

There's an example of one (spring-loaded to twist) in the "Easy-bake Twins" thread.... :D

I think that i would weld up steel nipples to the tanks and slip the pollished stacks in place only when u wanna cook.

just my opinion.

Could also make a nice cap for each, for when not in use.
