first build 30x60 hybrid

Post by willysmoke » March 8th, 2013, 5:55 pm

Starting my first smoker build, a 30x60 hybrid. I have a new piece of 30" steel pipe that has a Brown protective coating inside and out. Do I need to get this off of the inside and, if so, what is the best method. I started sanding and wire brushing it, but it seems pretty tough. Any advice is appreciated.

What size angle iron should I use for a 48x28 rack? I plan to smoke up to 150 lbs on it.

I would use 1x1 tubing with a center sliding runner to support the rack.

Thanks. I like the tubing idea. I'll give that a try.

I am putting strap on the inside of my door openings. Should I run a solid bead around the inside of the strap to seal the opening or spot weld and then seal with gasket caulking?

Probably less warpage if you tack it/caulk it ...

I didn't even caulk my flange or use rope seal. I just made sure everything fit snugly, and I don,t have any issues. I welded my flange together and ground the welds smooth prior to installing onto the firebox wall with a few 1" stitch welds. Also my door latch hooks on a ramped block so that the door can be shut as snug as you like.

Progress is slower than I had hoped for. Fighting a sprung door. Gonna be done by this weekend?

:LG:

Don't get discouraged by the door, you doing a great job. There are many ways to get the door back where you need it. I use a jack and a chain myself. I never put a deadline on my finish time either, it causes me to rush through some things and I would rather spend a bit longer and get what I really want than sell out because I put some time limit on my project. That is just me.

Working on the door. Bottle Jack, chain, and heat. Actually came around a little too much. Thanks for the encouragement. Am I doing this correctly?

Yep, and you will know it soon. Just a little at a time so you don't go past where you need to go. It may take a few tests to confirm when you have it correctly.
