Draft holes

Post by stumpjumper » April 17th, 2013, 5:05 pm

The plan for the 500 gal reverse flow smoker does not show how the draft holes should be laid out and how large they need to be to get enough air to make it burn properly.

I can't answer that, but if you bought plans PM frank cox, he'll fix you up.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

I am planning to put four 5" holes near the bottom of the FB. Two on each side. then have a slider/damper on the outside to close them off. Using the calculator, that should work.

Is there any benefit of doing it any other way? opinions welcome.

Are those holes round? I say that because I find it easier to cover rectangular holes the way you said, and you only gave one dimension.

that is what I was thinking.

Guessing that there are many options.

The other idea I had was to put the holes along the back and just have one slider. Does anyone have experience to share?

I've seen folks use both sides, I just used the door which seems to pull the air through the fire into the CC. But I think either will work, this is a pick of my intake air vents. I can also load from the top of the FB, as I also included a pic of.

I'm sure your doing fine. Keep up the good work.

I love that fire door RC!, I went with a single inlet on the door so the air has to pass the fire to get to the CC and on to the chimney,

from what i have learned, air that comes in under the fire is much hotter than air that passes across the fire via door vents. Anwswer... put in both, close off what you don't want or need.
