Fixen up big smoker

Post by rlk4 » April 22nd, 2013, 7:29 pm

I have bough a big smoker. It needs some fixen up.
Photos tonight
List of what I see.
trailer is junk
it is made out of 800 gallon water tank I was told
they just used the last 22” of tank 24" high for fire box
i think the fix box is to small
it is to deep for door on one side of tank
smoke stack i am begining to think is to small
it has parts of a barrel to make the reverse flow

I found this calculator and pluged in numbers the fire box is a half moon so had to just estimate

http://feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator. ... .68,152.06

hope not a no no to post link. but it tells a lot about what i have.

this says I have 42% of the fire box I need. ect

found this forum after i bought. i do have access to scrap metal and have a friend that is retired that has a shop. so i think we can salvage this with out going belly up. the guy i got it off of has used it and i am told gets good meat when done.

Sounds like you have some good rework ahead of you. I used the calculator when I designed the 500gal RF that I am just finishing. Found it to be very educational and easy to use for the uneducated.

Share some pics when you get a chance.

Since it looks like fire box is to small as I rebuild it I was wondering about making it a fb / grill would use smoker as warmer when grilling dogs / burgers. Take out rack when smoking some type of flat top to do pots of beans on when smoking Remember I am new at this. Thanks for your input

have decided to not proceed with this one. but wanted to get to smoking faster than starting from scratch. feel I need to learn more before i build. bought a used ex competition one off CL. Didn’t think to take photo. Smoked chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs on it for mothers day. Chicken thighs were very good. Chicken breast were a little dry but were skin less. Hamburgers were a little to well done. But all was eatable and had a great flavor. It is a reverse flow. Thanks Frank for your advice and time.
