firebox blues

Post by smokmen » October 23rd, 2013, 1:52 pm

OK I am at a crossroad, got into welding groove and under estimated my measurement . My fire box came out 8 inches short, the bad part I did not realize it until I got everything in place besides it was a long day. My question is if I added the extra 8 inches to the top which will be 8 inches above the BP will that matter or make a difference on heat circulation?

I thought about since I got to add that 8 inches just maybe converting the top of the FB into a grill, where if need be use a hing attached lid as the extra 8 inches?

From what I've seen it does cause a problem, the top of the FB really should be the same as the BP for the heat to move in smoothly as possible. I've seen several people do mods on factory offsets and the has been very helpful to them. Can you add to the bottom instead?

I can possibly add to the bottom I didn't think of that one. But what is the worst case if I leave the 8 inches off? Will I have to build hotter fire?

If I'm not mistaken (and I have been before) your FB won't yield enough CFM's of hot air/radiant heat to heat all the total cubic inches of CC to get up to the temp you want to cook at. Adding to the bottom would be the very best direction to go by far.

Or make your cc a bit smaller to match size.
