Thermometers...

Post by jaybird302 » November 7th, 2013, 1:01 pm

Ok gents, I did a search which turned up a bunch of random results, so here go's.

Has anyone ever started a thread based on the t-meters we use? I'm in the process of building my smoker(still gathering materials) and wanted to get some advice on thermometers. I have the hard mounted one for the CC on it's way, so I'm really interested in what digitals you guys use. Christmas is coming up and my in-laws never know what to get me so I figured this would be a good idea. I'm not looking to enter comps or go pro at this, so a good bang for buck type meter would be best.

Please, if this thread would be better in another location, by all means move it. I'm building an RF and I see the amount of activity this part of the forum gets, so I figured here's as good a place as any....

Thanks guys!

Jay

Thermometers...

I personally love the thermometers we have in stock… They are accurate out-of-the-box and adjustable for later on when they go out of calibration… I highly recommend them

I prefer Maverick ET 732 for digital, and as DC said we have those T-gauges on the site;

So, I've seen the different probes, ambient vs food. Couldn't you use the food probe as an ambient? Only issue I could see is if the food probe isn't rated for the temps it might see.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can buy another probe so you can have 2 for ambient temp. Don't ask me tho, I don't even have one.

They are interchangeable ….. at least i've used core (meat) probes in the pit (ambient) before with fine results. I gues I never tried it the other way around.

I always wear out my meat probes first and end up buying a couple spare meat probes so I usually end up with just those around when I need to check the CC temp..

I think it's best if they aren't touching metal so I slip a piece of silicone tubing over the probe at the base and wrap a little light wire around it to an alligator clip or magnet then set it on the grate.

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

The dial gauges on smokerplans are awesome for just monitoring temps at a glance, Mavericks are awesome if you can't be right next to your pit all the time or are trying to do something else and my thermopen is an essential for food temps. If you have a good dial thermometer and a thermopen you. Are good for anything, but the maverick is icing on the cake.

I even bought extra probes for the Mavericks that are 6 feet long. You've got to make sure they are for the model you have as they are not all interchangeable. I keep one installed in my smoker and the extra length lets me keep the transmitter far enough away from the heat. I've also read about not letting the tips touch metal.

Add another vote for the Maverick 732. My woman bought me mine two Christmases ago. Best present ever.

Word is Mrs Claus has put me down for a Maverick 732. Not sure how to take it since she justified it as a serious need for a probe upgrade. :homer:

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

I added one to my wish list for the in-laws along with 2 6 foot probes. We shall see.

I gave my wife a hint. I told her if any of the kids wanted to know what to get me for Christmas to tell them a Maverick ET732.

Don't take it too badly Solo. It could just mean that since you want it, its very important to her that you get it. I hope.
