Since I had a can of Thermalox Clear in the shop I finally had a chance to check out the fine print some more. The way they say it is …"maintains gloss up to 500F and resistant to 1200F". So you may see it dull on the FB but it should stay glossy on the CC. I imagine that wouldn't be too bad for appearance. In either event you'll stopped the rust problem. They also made it very clear (no pun intended) that you should not use it on cooking surfaces i.e. pots and pans and grates etc.
If you decide to do it then take a little extra time with a flap sander and "artistically" buff the steel that shows since you'll lock in that pattern of swirls for good once you clear coat it.
