I would say 3/16" will work, but it will have a hot spot near the fire box end about 12" long. You may want to put a shadow plate or even just lay another piece of the plate on top of the BP for that first 12" to reduce the hot spot effect. I like the way your cooker is coming along, That one big door will be great for the whole hog events. Good job!

And Gizmo, he lives in Florida too. lol

Sorry I wasn't clear - lol - it's actually 5/16 plate and it's just the divider between the two cook chambers - the fire boxes are now 3/4 cause again that's all I got lol (free free free :kewl: ) - will be about 1700 lbs in fire boxes! :oopssign:

That's what I'm hoping for - I think if I can bring the temp up nice and steady and get it to my set point it should hold for quite awhile - the 3/4" BP will stay hot for hours and hours - every aspect of this thing is heavy duty - the fab hinges will be made from 1" x 2" steel bars - stacks will be 6" sch 40 1/4" wall -

Hey everybody - need an idea as to where I can find someone who can fab with either a laser / plasma or CNC machine a Navy Seal Trident for mounting on this thing - Just a little dedication to my dad.

I've got a buddy with a CNC mill that might be able to do it depending on how big you want it... He may give you a rash of crap as he's a Marine, but that's pretty normal though.

Just checking, what size opening is that between the FB and CC? It looks too big from the pic. Don't want to sound like a
critic just trying to help.

No, not at all!!! I have an admiration and respect for anyone that has served! Wish I had... I was saying that the "banter" between Navy and Marines is never ending...

Rod - that's just where the FB will attach to the CC - the throat opening will be in the back of the FB - the FB top will also extend into the CC as the BP - wow! that's a ton of abbreviations =))

Jay I was just kidding with ya... And you are correct about the banter... After 10 years in the Marine Corps I pick fun at a lot of Squids... but I also have much respect for Anyone who has served...

Good deal, I see you got it! Cool, I look forward to seeing it finished and I'll ride over and check it out closer when it goes for the test cook.

Jay - Thanks and I will get with you and see how I can make it happen - Dad was an original plank member of Seal Team 2 and the anchor that is in front of their facility in Virginia Beach was recovered by him and another team member... Everything that I'm doing on the smoker is a reflection of him. He had a great imagination for this kinda thing so the hours that I put into this are hours spent with him even though he's gone now (he taught me his craft as I was growing up and its a great joy to finally be able to apply it). It doesn't have to be the Trident but I would like something special maybe even the their original Team 2 insignia. :welder:

Rod - You're welcome anytime - the more the merrier - I'm sure there will be many test cooks before we attempt to compete in the Pig Jam that's held in Plant City every November... It will be my first competition so we will see how it turns out. I'm hoping that with all the mass that it will hold it's operating temp for a while once its up where I want it. :-bd

Just a couple update pics - first is the fire boxes.... Well at least the materials for the fire boxes (disregard the 1 1/2" plates that it's sitting on that's for another project)

The other one is of course the doors trimmed in 3/16 x 2" flat bar - still need some cleaning up but otherwise done

We will hang it from a crane and get an accurate weight. Then comes the fun of naming it and building a trailer to pull it around. It's coming along slowly, but so far I've been lucky and haven't had to cut anything back off - knock on wood - sometimes I feel like I'm over thinking it but it's worked so far.
