Offset smoker build

Post by Forever draggin » March 24th, 2014, 3:05 pm

This is my first build, it's a regular offset.
20" diameter, cooking chamber is 51.5" long.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

The last picture is as it sits currently. Not sure what I'm gonna do bout the front legs and how I'm going to incorporate a rack between the legs. It's been a fun project so far, but I have a question. After it's finished I'm thinking bout getting it powder coated and was wondering if it holds up to the heat.

Also do you fellas get the inside coated as well? I'm worried bout it burning and ruining food

Nice looking build. Don't put any finish on the inside. I would recommend getting it media blasted and then just season it.

You will need at least the 800F rated powder coat for the FB - any color as long as you want black.
The CC could be standard powder coat in colors rated at 400F but it will still discolor around the connection to the FB.

I wouldn't recommend you powder coat it :D

It's liquid ceramic but I've only heard of it being used on firearms. I never thought of using it on a smoker, I'll have to check into that it sounds like a great idea.

Only thing wrong with cerakote is the cost to do something as large as a smoker and it must be baked on in an oven similar to powdercoat. Not sure if building a fire and heating from the inside would work but it's a thought.

I have a buddy who's family runs a powder coating business. They also do ceramic coating. I had an exhaust done on a 1929 model A ford. When I got it back it was a dull light grey but after a little time with a buffer it looked like polished aluminum

They make an air cure as well. Had my crawfish burner done, everytime I use it it gets cherry red. Still looks great. It has faded just a tad, but looks like a matte finish. These smokers don't get near that hot.

Anyways lil progressImage
