Stick burning in the rain and wind is no fun. Dumped 5kg of charcoal in there and set the mavericks alarms and going to sleep lol

A quick update, changed the format slightly (removed turn buckles) and painted nicely and cured fb paint. Just mounted the handle.

I think you nailed it Gizmo. Yup....4 1/2 tons. :-o

Pete, I may be a bit lost but didn't you have the slide off guide rails on there a few weeks ago? Now that the turnbuckles are gone, how are you going to secure the CC to the FB , and... What is the purpose of the four corner holes on the top of the FB ? I like this job you did immensely !

I got rid of the turnbuckles as Im thinking of mounting some log warming boxes onto the sides, and the turnbuckles would be right in the way. The top mount rail (we call it the ladder) now bolts on in the same way the firebox bolts to the base. The four corner holes on the firebox are 25mm diameter, and I have 12mm bolt threads welded directly to the ladder. The reason for this is to allow for misplacement, its kinda hard to position the threads that accurately by eye, and to allow for expansion and shifting around.

If its pork shoulders, I got close to 20kg in on one rack the other day, so call it 40-50kgso about 90lbs on both racks. There is enough headroom to add more racks so maybe we could get 70kg or something in there if we needed it...

Pete, sorry for being so slow to understand one thing. What is the benefit of removing the ladder....besides not having it sticking out while under transport. Although it might make good lift points for loading it into the truck.

I ask these questions only because I really really like this design. Your reports of its efficiency are very attractive and I want to build a rectangular shaped smoker like Egor . The fact that your firebox placement is directly under the CC and reduces the need for it sticking out behind the cook chamber makes it even more appealing for a patio type I could use here at the house. My 275 gallon rf is way to big for family type cooking there's really only 4 of us and sometimes only my wife and I. The 2 dogs have their own food !

Hi Puff,

The ladder does not really need to remove, but I thought I may as well make it removable rather than weld it on so I can reconfigure, and I can split it down into a very small package if I remove the ladder. Now it is bolted on though, I do feel that I probably may never take it off, but its nice to know I can. The expansion space is also a nice idea to stop warping etc.

I have some special briquettes coming soon that claim to have very long even burn time, even better than the coconut husk stuff I am using now. I would love to be able to run it unattended for 5-6 hours on charcoal with wood for smoke for cooks where I cant afford to babysit it so often. The basket I have is designed for log burning, its deep with sloped sides - im going to maybe make a divider for it to mimic a Klose maze basket and try the charcoal in that.

I would also suggest if you do build a square one, consider insulating it. This smoker is good but I cant even dream of how good it would be if it were insulated.

Pete.

I feel I should also show this video again to remind everyone of the way I designed the smoker to move.... It looks so dirty and crap unpainted!

I watched that video on YouTube the other night.... Short and to the point. It was just so practical I watched it several times. Great job and I love the lowboy transport frame to wheel it around ... AND, I am definitely building one. I've been planning on it for the last several weeks.

Obviously if you dont need to move it around or disassemble it like I do, then there is no reason why you cant skip the ladder and just weld the CC straight to the FB and have it as one piece.
