First real build coming soon.

Post by docrodg » July 1st, 2014, 10:08 am

I am getting ready to do my first custom build. I procured a 275 gal tank for 20 bucks that has no rust, so the time is right to make a good smoker! Plans so far are for a reverse flow smoker and pig roaster that can also be utilized as a regular charcoal grill. The tank will lay on it's side, giving me a 60x44 cooking area for when I am cooking at parties or work. Between the baffle plate and the grates the tank will be made higher with a welded in insert to give me clearance to add a removable charcoal rack for straight grilling, with a crank system to adjust rack height. This way I can tow it to work, start smoking some butts the night before, then put in the charcoal rack and grill burgers, steaks, etc. the day of the event when the butts come off.

This is going to be one heavy mutha. If I can scrounge the right materials I will build it onto a trailer with a couple of propane burners, counterspace, and undercounter refrigerators that I can run off my inverter or plug in to a cord. Barring that I could just mount it all on my truck bed but would prefer to do the trailer so I can still haul other things with the beast.

Progress may be slow due to a crazy work schedule that happens in EMS but I am finalizing the drawings right now.

I am trying to picture this. Is it one of the oblong oil tanks?

Yup. An Oblong tank laid on it's side. Still trying to decide if it should have one door or two.

Maybe frame it out square and put cabinet doors, then you have the best of both worlds.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.
