Insulated FB Assistance

Post by goodwla » July 21st, 2014, 9:05 am

My build has been working great for the past couple of years. Image

After sweating my butt of this weekend doing a hog roast, it is time to insulate the FB. The FB is a stickburner only and all 5/8 plate with the vents on both sides and you can see the door.

My questions....
1. What is the best insulation to use? (link would be awesome too)
2. How thick do I need to make the interior? any recommendations would also be welcome on how you have done this. If I need to cut off the face I can, but would prefer to lay inside if possible.

Thanks Guys,

That is not a small smoker!! You got guts to pull that behind a Chevy. =))
Most guys are using Roxul insulation. It comes in different thicknesses. You could cut it to the size you need and plate the inside walls. The question is, will it make your FB to small for the smoker? Should you insulate the outside and plate it with 3/16"? Just my $.02.

If I stay 2 inches on all sides, I am still at 108%. So I am good there.

She is nice and big. 4700#.

now go 3/16 or will that just be junk in a year?

If I was putting it on the inside I'd use at least 1/4".

Put it on the outside and use 18ga. No real weight to it

I've got to agree with Rodcrafter. I had just ordered a box of Roxul solid insulation for another smoker I am starting... the 2"x2'x4' sheets come 6 to a box and the shipping weight for that is 48 lbs. The combined weight of the wrap will probably be under 85lbs. The Roxul rep told me that the density of the sheets and their heat resistance capability makes them a good application for smokers.

Nice smoker by the way but really, A Chevy? Only kidding.

Make no mistake, there ain't no powder in this Puff ! And... I'm not really a crazy person but I play one in real life
