Firebox to cook chamber flow?

Post by Dragger40 » July 24th, 2014, 4:53 pm

OK, I know this probably isn't the ideal way to mate the firebox to the cook chamber but I need my box mounted low so that I can mount my warmer tanks on top of the firebox and have the "look" that I want.
Since my firebox will be so low I can't make my opening as big as the calculator recommends so I was thinking about cutting in a pipe between the two to make up the difference.
Ever seen this done? Stupid idea?

I haven't seen it before, but as long as the pipe comes from the top part of the FB. It should still work. But your drawing shows it coming from the bottom of the FB.

That was my quickie cell phone drawing.
I just wasn't sure is splitting the draft like that was a good idea or not but it would be alot easier than modifying the bottom of the tank and the firebox.
I'm not set on this just kicking it around.

At this point in time what you're suggesting is a untested theory… I haven't seen anybody do that before… But in theory should work… Why is your firebox so low? Are you not able to make it any larger side to side or anymore play out of it from top to bottom?

My fire box is 36" x 24" wide and 20" tall. I built it this size because I'm mounting two 30 gallon air tanks on top of it.
These tanks have an 18" footprint and they will mount side by side.
I plan to use these as warmer ovens or open a damper and use one or both as a smoker for little jobs at home. I'm building a slide - in divider so I can just use one half of the firebox if I'm smoking on ONE of the warmers.

I want the warmer tanks to sit at the same level across the top that the large smoker tank sits.... just a little picky I guess but I want this trailer to look as good as I hope it works.
The opening to the cook chamber is about 21" x 4 1/2" half moon. It's a little over half of what it needs to be.
I can't really go deeper in the tank or cut it any higher and still make the tanks all sit at the same height.

This is not hard to do and it will work fine.

You are basically chasing 3 variables at one time and you need to lock one down and let the other 2 define themselves.

So...
Move the horizontal cut more into the tank just until you get the transfer opening size the pit calculator is calling for.
Decide and set the width of the FB and leave it alone.
Move the bottom of the FB up or down to create the correct total volume of the FB that needs to connect to that CC.
At this point you can do one of two things: Move the FB over to the new opening size (which will likely put nearly the whole FB under the CC tank), or , leave the FB where it is now and draw a line from the floor of the FB at the wall against the CC at an angle out across the bottom of the CC to the end of the new/deeper cut and create the angled floor you show in your drawing. You'll find the total volume of the FB is a little over the 100% but that's not a problem.

Clear as mud? :D

My fire box is all cut out and it is actually going to be insulated. The 36 x 24 x 20 box is inside a 38 x 26 x 22 box. It will have 1" of insulation all around and both boxes are 1/4" .
I know exactly what you are saying about moving the box farther under the cook chamber but I can't do that or I won't have enough room on top of the firebox for my two small tanks. I think I will do like you were saying and drop the cc floor into the wall of the fb or vise versa.
My fire box is at 106% now .... do you think this will have a ton of effect on it?
I know I'm difficult and hard headed but I'm wanting get a certain look when it's done.

Thanks for the replies.

There you go making up words again DC….

Sorry - I misunderstood - I thought you were just at the drawing stage….

I'm with RC - it will work fine - you'll just build slightly smaller fires to hit the same cook temps ….. :D

I just decided to cut the hole in my fire box to the size I needed (about 22 x 7" I think it was) and then make a ramp up into the belly of the tank from the firebox.
I'll post some pics when I get it all mounted but it might be a while.

At the moment I'm painstakingly drilling a series of 4" holes that need to be done before I can finish the firebox. My weak little ESAB plasma cutter won't touch the 1/4" metal and I don't own a torch!
