Insulated Firebox: Does it change the required size?

Post by Q-Dat » October 11th, 2014, 11:59 pm

I'm wondering if insulating a firebox that is too small can make up for it by minimizing heat loss. Seems like it would, since you won't need as big of a fire with the insulation.
Am I right?

It will help a bit. But the real reason for the firebox size is the amount of air flow needed to keep the smoker at a consistent temp. I still make them the same size.

Ok thanks. That answers my question. I had been eyeballing the HBT/Greasy Hill pits and noticed that the fireboxes look on the small side. Was wondering how much after the fact insulation would help.
