RF with vertical smoke box added?

Post by Brisket Envy » December 2nd, 2014, 9:42 am

I received a request for a pit, but not just an offset RF smoker, but requested a vertical smoker at the end.

That would require the vertical smoker to be located above the firebox.

Advantage: It could benefit from some of the radiated heat from the solid partition separating it from the firebox.
Reasonable?

Should I abandon the RF, and mount the vertical piece at the opposite end?
If so, how much temp difference would one normally expect between the horizontal and vertical cooking chambers?
How do you make the best use of the design, if the difference is substantial?

Normally, what is the philosophy with the additional vertical piece, in the standard configuration?
Which meats where, and why?

I could make the horizontal smoker RF, and add the vertical to the other end, and give it its own firebox at its bottom end.
That would give better control, if the meats in each needed different cooking temps, or the option to use one, and not the other...

If they share the firebox, using the pic calculator, I guess I would add up the total cooking chamber sizes (horizontal and vertical) when figuring out the firebox dimensions??

Right now, I am thinking about a 20"x36" horizontal section. I figure you could place 3 briskets side by side in it on two different racks, and have a 16" diameter vertical smoker where you could put some butts, birds, sausage, or whatever else.

So many options, so little knowledge.

Thanks

Actually, I built one of those not too long ago, just not pretty:)

This one will be a regular horizontal offset, firebox at one end, and below the horizontal cooking chamber, with a vertical cooking chamber at one end or another.
All sections, likely built from pipe.

Following. Check out Bubba Grills at www.bubbagrills.net. This is my inspiration for my reverse flow. Rib box is extension of the smoke chamber with the stack on top of the box. Lot of guys winning comps on them. I'll let you know how it works in a couple months.
