Reverse Flow w/ Remote Firebox and Grill

Post by bbroper » November 10th, 2014, 9:39 pm

Finally found some time to work on my 100 gal RF with a side grill.

Door layout

Door cut out
Created some plates and sunk them in the concrete, so I could weld the post to them.

Concrete welding plates
Then added a holder for the tank.
2014-11-10 20.14.20.jpg
Then finally able to set the tank on top.

More to come in the next few weeks...

ToDo List:
Set CC doors
Add BP Plate
Add Plate to separate Grill and CC area
Build fire box
Attach remote fire box to CC
Add smoke stack
Build Grill rack for CC and grill side.
Build test fire
Clean and paint

Seems simple... :D

What is the dimension of your tank and door cut outs? Looks similar to what I might start building.

It is a 100 gallon compressor tank, but I cannot remember the dimensions off the top of my head. I will get everything measured, and get it posted when I get back in town.

Most of us would have built it complete and then tried to move it after it got heavy. LOL. Looking good.

I hear ya... It was all my 15 year old son (he is 6' 4"/225 lbs) and I could do to get it up there.

I got a couple of hours to work on it today... The CC door warp on me... surprise surprise. :hissy:

I took some pipe clamps and put a rose bud to it and it came back together pretty good.

Could you have your son @ Arrowhead this coming weekend? The Chiefs could use an offensive lineman. :help:

Finally able to spend a little time working on it this weekend. I put the plate in between the Grill side and the smoker CC. Also got the grill door back in shape and attached. Also was able to start welding up the firebox. Just need to put on the door and connect it to the CC with a pipe.

Didn't take a lot of pic's, but here is one...

So what size is this pipe going to be that connects the FB and CC?

The calculator calls for an 8.13 in round opening for the CC to Firebox opening. I had a post a while back where we debated a remote firebox, and Gizmo suggested tapering with Large End at Firebox. My steel yard had a piece of 9X8 square tubing, and I have been trying to come up with a way to make a sliding damper so it would be tapered.

The connection might have to go through a couple of iterations until I get it right.

I am thinking of starting with an 8 in pipe and see how well it will hold temps.

Since you will be losing a lot of heat I wouldn't make the distance apart too great.

I agree. I was looking at that when I finished picking up tools and it looks like it will be about 18 inches.

Since the legs are offset I'm guessing the FB will be under the right side of the CC right? Then the pipe connecting the two will go straight up? If this is the case I would say you will maintain enough heat to pull it off. But I've seen people put those detached FB off to the side and expect the heat to travel side ways. I'm not sure how well that works.

RC you are Right. It will be under the right side and will be a straight shot up. I am planning on connecting the Firebox on the top to help force heat up as well.

I was able to spend a little time working on the grill this weekend. I added the air inlet for the grill side and used a screw jack to make the charcoal adjustable within the grill.
