got another question, thinking about adding a dedicated grill on the opposite side for cooking burgers and steaks, and even hot dogs? What style gills are you building and to what size? Any pics would be extremely helpful. Thanks

That is a 2013 word explanation. Each picture is worth a thousand words plus that little comment at the end.

It almost seems that this is something a trailered smoker should have.. you'll have options for it all

There's a chance that after a couple burns, it may seal itself. :LG:

Nice and stout. I love the squared off top and doors.

Hmmm, I got a question for the experts, I fired it off today using the method in the stickies above, and it came up to about 240 or so and I let it ride for a bit. It held fairly stable and then I decided to try and let it stretch its legs and get hot to clean it out a little more, but it really struggled and wouldn't climb any higher. I started with the 80 gallon tank, squared the doors, added the 20"x20"x20" fire box that was about 115% which is a little large, and used a 3.5" ID pipe 36" long for the exhaust, it shows to be about 6" short on exhaust. Is the low temps a correlation to short exhaust? Thanks

Did you figure the FB size for the size of your tank or your entire CC area? Now with the squared off doors, your FB may be too small.

Edit: this happens to be the same picture ID posted on page 1....sorry

The 80 gallon build I just finished has about the same size fire box.. It also has about the same size squared off doors. What do you have for the intakes on the firebox?

For what it's worth.....My exhaust is a 4" square iD about 27" tall with 2- 2 1/4 x 8" firebox dampers. That smoker will run 375-400 when I open it up. The fire basket is smaller so I can only use 14" lengths of wood but 4-5 3" diameter pieces with dampers open, will get it up there

An easy test for inlet air is crack the FB door open. To test the stack length add cardboard roll to the stack top if you don't have anything preventing you from doing that. I wonder if you are using an fire basket? How about letting us see some picks and maybe we will see something.

I think those are great tests....I particularly like the stack extension.

I am using a fire rack made from angle and expanded metal. My cook chamber opening is exactly the size the calculator suggested. I will add a cardboard extension tomorrow and see if that helps. I will get more pics tomorrow and see if we can figure it out. The top of my firebox showed 425 degrees with an infrared thermometer and cook chamber showed real close to the thermometer readings in the door.

Something to think about is the placement of the air intakes. Rod r after has a good point to crack the fire box door. But it can lie to you. If the intakes are not positioned correctly you will draft above or beside the fire and actually stuck the heat out of the fire. Your air needs to enter the fire from the bottom. This is a very common problem when you can't get temps up high.

Same thing today. Won't climb as I thought it Would. Tilted rack to gain bottom clearance and nothing. Added extension to exhaust and nothing. Struggled to 250. Going to measure my FB to CC opening to see if that is an issue. Agh!!!! :headwall:

Cant figure out how to get pics right... lol

Build a fire as close to the cc as you can. Close the vents and open the doors and see what happens. Put the basket back like normal
