My first build 60 Gallon RF

Post by Tommygunn » July 30th, 2015, 8:48 am

I am building a 60 gallon RF. I have a question for you guys. I have the door cut out and now I am trying to figure out how to cut the opening for the firebox. I know I need my RF plate 4" off the bottom but I don't have a clue how to transfer my lines to the tank.

4" below your CG or 4" above the bottom of your CC?
The way I decided mine was. First I set where I wanted my lowest CG. Then looked at different options for my throat. Then I made adjustments from there. So I would decide on your throat shape which will determine its height. Then see where that puts you in relation to your CG. And allowing room for your BP. BPs are normally at the top of the throat.
So three things to consider throat height, CG height and where the BP will fit. I've heard the BP can be 2-6"s below the CG. So you have some wiggle room there.
As far as transferring lines. Once you get your throat figured out mark it on the end of your CC. Do you have bell ends or square? I have dealt with the bell ends personally but it's the same approach but I different cut. Pete M has calculators to help.
Good luck!

I used this link for my throat. (I was working with flat ends not bells)

I need the BP 4" from the bottom of my cook chamber. I am making my bottom grate 2" above my BP so that I can have 2 racks. I want my top rack about 8" off the bottom so I will still have about 5" of clearance on my top rack. That should be more then enough for ribs and chicken.

The tank specs are 45"x 20". The RF plate will be 4" from the bottom of the tank.

I got it now, what you can do is set your tank on a table and secure it with the top at top dead center. Then use 2 framing squares 1 along the top center line hanging off the end for the FB, the other one sliding down the first to reach the point you are going for ie 4" from the bottom. Mark it at 4" then take a level put it on the mark and allow it to roll to one side at a time marking as you go. When you get done, check it by placing the level on either the front or back at the furthest mark get the level, level then look across the line. It should be on target.
