recommended fb to cooker opening 216.00%
That's 216 sq in, not %. That is the throat area and is the opening from the firebox (FB) to the cook chamber (CC). Feldon's calc uses a semicircular shape, which is not the most efficient use of space. Try my Throat calc for cylindrical tanks or the Trapezoidal calc. Either will keep the FB as low as possible.

EDIT: Sorry, I missed page 3.

Ok Pete this is what I got off your pit calculator I put it in as a cylinder the diameter 30" length 115" sq fb size 31x31x31 8" chimney and fb intake sq 12x3
Cook chamber volume - 81,288.71cu in
Actual fb size - 29,791.00 cu in
Rec. Fb size - 27,096.00 cu in
Fb differential - 109.95%
Rec. chimney vol. - 1,489.55 cu in
Chimney length - 29.65"
Fb intake area - 89.37 sq in
Count of intake - 2.48
Rec. Throat size - 238.33 sq in

I put it in as a cylinder the diameter 30" length 115"
That will give you a larger volume than what you have. It calculates assuming flat ends. I calculate it to be a 325 gallon tank.

Cook chamber volume - 75,000 cu in
Actual fb size - 27,000 cu in (30 x 30 x 30)
Rec. Fb size - 25,000 cu in
Fb differential - 108%
Rec. chimney vol. - 1,350 cu in
Chimney length - 8" rnd x 27"
Fb intake area - 81 sq in
Count of intake - 2 (13 x 3)
Rec. Throat size - 216 sq in
What is the "dam height"
The dam height is if you want a grease dam. It's just a 1" or so high flat bar to stop melted fat getting where it's not supposed to go. If you're building a RF, you can make a grease dam on the end of the baffle plate. If you're making a standard offset, you need a grease dam at the throat opening so it doesn't get into the FB and cause a flare up (at best).

Ok I misunderstood that I was thinking it calculated for the rounded bell ends. So what you have calculated will be the correct measurements for the tank I have. And yes it is 325 water gallons. Thank you for yalls time and help again. And I appologize for all the questions that I have.

Shawdawg74,

Everyone feeds off of helping out. It's like vitamin C or fresh air, you gotta have it.. Go out and build the best smoker and then pass on all you've learned to the next guy who may have questions. You should only apologize if you don't use the information given ...

Kind of like Ricky Ricardo and Lucy.... "You have a lotta SPLAININ' to do"

Ohh I will most defiantly post pics I am still doing my research I know how I wanna build it I just don't want something threw together. I want it to function properly also. Like I said in the beginning I am a newbie to the whole smoking scene. I still have a lot of questions and things to be clarified before I start the build.

You cut back from the belled end to the cylinder at a height of 10.316" from the bottom. If the tank is laying on the ground, situated the way you want, take a piece of some scrap cut at ~10 3/8" long and use that to trace your mark onto the tank by standing the scrap piece on the floor and mover it around the tank end and mark. That should equate to an opening width at the top of the cut-out of 28.5". On the FB end, you can tack the end plate to the tank (before the FB is put together) and mark around outside of the tank for the shape or use some cardboard instead and transfer it to the end plate. It'll be easier to weld if the tank protrudes into the FB a little.

Don't forget that all the calculators assume inside dimensions. If your tank is 30" OD and it has 1/4" walls, enter 29.5" into the calculator. It's also safer to make the throat opening a touch bigger than smaller.

The height of your BP should be no lower than the top of your throat.
With that said your lowest cooking rack can be 2-6" above your BP.

The big guy (Frank) advises 75% of throat area for the baffle plate gap to increase air flow.

Figured I'd be back sitting down and putting it on paper and the fb intake area is 81 sq in. And the count of intake is 2. I put it it in as 12x3 now is that the siz of the vents or the slide with the holes on the vent . My thinking was that the 12x3 was the size of the area I wanted my vents and cut the number of vents it calculated out in it . Any advice on the fb intake. I hope this question isn't to confusing.

You'll want 81 inches of open area total for the vent. It doesn't hurt for it to be bigger because you can always close it off.

81 sq in total. You'll only need that much air to get it up and going, once it's dialed in, the intakes will be barely open to maintain a low temp. I like to have multiple intakes just incase the wind starts blowing right in the intake, you can close that one and open one on the opposite side. I also try to keep them as low as possible on the FB.

Measure Twice.....Cut Three Times.
