80 gallon vertical smoker

Post by motoridr09 » April 20th, 2015, 9:16 am

Started my second build yesterday. Just got the doors marked hinged and cut. Hard to get alot done when your wife wants you to help out with a newborn and a 1 year old haha. Anyways heres what I have so far. Oh and I didn't know where to put this topic.. Its going to have a baffle plate so i guessed reverse flow.

That should make a dandy, be sure to seal the FB up good and I would still call it an Vertical even with a BP.

I got a question... what would yall use for the air intakes for the firebox? Ive been looking at the calculator but im guessing that those number arent quite right for verticals.

I would weld in 3 1'' pipe nipples, 1 on the back and 1 on each side and put ball valves on them. They're easy to adjust and close completely off.

That would be enough air flow?? Will this run alot different than the reverse flow... not counting the big size difference

Verticals work a lot different than offsets, I don't think it will require using all 3 at the same time but that will give you some options if the wind starts blowing. Gizmo has built quite a few verticals and he says that he uses 1 1'' gate valve and has never had any problems getting to or maintaining temperature.

Alright. Thanks for the help. With it being a 24 inch wide tank i was going to use a 20 or 22 inch plow disk as the baffle plate between the fire and the cook racks. Do you think that will work alright?

Alright. I've never built or smoked on a vertical before but i thought the design was compact for the back porch and an efficient design so i wanted to try it out

Looks sweet! I think I have my next build in my mind. I have a 24" propane tank. But I might turn it into patio RF.

Got some stuff done. Burned the tank out got the flat strap around the doors and welded a plow disk to act as a baffle plate.

I fired it up to season it. This thing is really low maintenance. I only had to touch it once in 3 hours. I'm gonna be doing an all nighter tomorrow night to cook some pork butts and a couple fattys for my son's birthday party on saturday. It looks like this thing should do what is supposed to
