First reverse flow

Post by byersfarm » March 8th, 2016, 8:56 am

I just finished up my first reverse flow. You may notice some ideas that I borrowed from this site. Image
It's a 36" diameter gas line pipe that I had. Luckily it was already cut to nearly perfect lengths. The FB is 25" long, and the CC is 72" long.

This is the CC with the slide out grate that we make. Image

This is the third smoker I've built, and they all have doors on the end with the slide out grate. Image

First reverse flow

Post by byersfarm » March 8th, 2016, 9:06 am

The pipe is a little over 3/8" at .404". This is the first one I've made with the help of a calculator and it made for a really clean burn this weekend. I'm going to make a sliding plate to adjust my BP gap down some. Image

The BP is 3/8".
The first cooker I built is more of a grill than a smoker. It's 36x77, and it led us to the slide grate. It can be opened from either end and gives us the ability to get away from the heat to work on the food. It doesn't have a detached firebox, but it is long enough to still get a good smoke on the other end. I only say all of that to explain why the doors are on the end. Image

I like the concept. The proof is in how it cooks.

That's a pretty big compliment considering the caliber of your work. The first one works better for steaks and indirect heat items like prime rib. The temp swing from one end to the other is about 100* when smoking, but we never have anything that makes it all the way to the fire end. It works great on hogs 100lbs and under.
The reverse flow only varies 5* across the CC. I cooked chickens, turkeys, butts, and ribs on it Saturday with great results. Obviously it's more of a purist smoker with a small grill in the FB.

That is a unique design on your grill, just when you think you've seen it all, something like this comes along. :kewl:

Interesting concept.

Sure would keep nosey neighbors from opening your smoker lid to check out what smells so good.

That's true! It would be funny to put some handles on it in normal places and just mess with them. lol
