Sliding charcoal baskets yes/no?

Post by Rufus T. Doofus » September 3rd, 2016, 6:58 am

I'm at the stage in my build where I'm planing internal racks and things. Since I've never operated a smoker I'm in the dark about what's a must-have feature vs. a cute convenience.

I've seen some few very cool designs here for sliding charcoal baskets. I'm curious if people find a sliding basket to be a big help or just a minor convenience? If you don't have a sliding basket do you wish you did or is it not a big deal?

Thanks.

I like a sliding basket so I can dump a charcoal chimney of hot coals in it then slide it in and throw sticks on it after that.

I vote yes on a sliding basket...makes it easier to deal with it

A sliding basket is a huge help in both dumping charcoal and in dumping ash. I only pull mine out to dump in the first batch of lit charcoal (then use sticks to feed it) and to dump the ash afterwords but it is a big help. I simply made my basket a half inch smaller than my door and put a piece of angle on both lower corners of the door to slide it in/out. No real work as the basket needs to sit up from the bottom of the firebox anyway.

While you are at it, a pull out ash pan Is a big help also...my clean out takes about 30 seconds and no ash means no rust!

Ditto on the sliding basket and ash pan. I put stops on my basket not to worry about pulling it out to far.

I made one for mine, and I am very pleased with it.

The sliding basket is good convenience.. Not a deal breaker but You will be glad u put that in. Now the sliding ash pan... That's a deal breaker. Unless you just can't make it happen for some reason, you will regret not putting in if you don't. I wish I had one everytime I gotta clean the cooker.
