firebox insulation ??? What to use

Post by Langer » January 2nd, 2017, 5:25 pm

Heya all.

I'm doing as much homework and asking as many questions as possible as I want to make sure my build is set up right. I'm wanting to do a double walled firebox for insulation, my question is. Do you fill the gap with anything between the steel, I read on one post you leave it empty as the air in between is the insulator once it warms up. Is that the case if not what do you use between the steel.

Thanks all, have a great day

firebox insulation ??? What to use

Big T is right for the GF cabinets but I'm not sure if that is what Frank used on his Mack build. Look that one up and see it is like you're going to build. There's more than one company that makes high heat insulation. Refractory insulation will work too.

"Mack" was done with Roxul too, that is one sweet unit! :kewl:

I'm lookin at using ceramic fibre blanket stuff (rated at 1500C)cause Roxul isn't available in Aus.

Squiggle I've been hounding the suppliers without a lot of success. When you get a "tradename" or such please share. :-bd

Yep, they keep steering me to rockwool. Which is what I used on the double pan. But it is a tad floppy and one needs to tack pins on the steel to hold it in place. Works well though so if all else fails I'll use that. I was looking for something a tad stiffer. I got a lead on something suitable but I have to take around 15 meters of it and it costs around 600 bucks for the 15 meters x 1.2 m high. So bit more than I got space to store it at the mo.
Anyway once I am able to drive again I'll perhaps scoot around to a couple of these places and actually look the stuff over.
Just thought you might have had a tradename or somesuch to get them looking a tad harder.

I'm using ceramic fiberglass insulation on the build I am doing now and it is so much easier to work with.
I used roxul on a prior build and it was not as easy to cut or get to stay in place when working with it.
I also had a difficult time finding roxul in the 1" thick roll or board thickness.
Just google search "superwool fiber HT" it's really easy to work with.

I am using ceramic wool as well. I got mine from Jet.com. I also got a 15% discount for new customers. I don't know if that promotion is still going on.

Very easy to work with. Just use a utility knife.
