Air tank build

Post by Badgerx1 » March 23rd, 2017, 6:05 pm

Long time lurker/stalker first time poster and smoker builder! Excited to start building.

I have been using a WSM 18 for the last few years with some good results and enjoying every cook on it. My dislikes is running out of room and getting tired of dealing with how the top and bottom racks are and the water pan.

I have been looking at and researching reverse flow smokers and seeing everyone else build has got me excited that this is something I can do with some help from my dad.

I was able to get my hands on a 44 gallon air tank for free so thought this would be a great to start.

Plenty of good info and a lot of helpful members here.

Welcome aboard! There's been a lot of smokers built from air tanks so it'll definitely make a nice one.

Welcome to the crew!
There's also lots of ways to make an RF, vertical, offset, center feed, each has plus and negatives. The vertical will operate more like what you have been using, but the offset will be like a hungry child always requiring attention. But who doesn't like to play with fire and feed hungry kids?

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement!
Haha who doesn't like to play with fire and cook some delicious food at the same time!

I was playing around with the pit calculator today and ran some numbers. Would love some feedback. I understand numbers but the dampener is confusing a bit. I like the styles of having round ones and the ones on the site through BBQ supply are nice as less I would have to fabricate. The same with the hinges.

All the numbers check out fine. The only thing that comes to mind is the part you mentioned about "dampeners" I'm guessing you are talking about air intakes on the FB? If that's right and you are planning on making round pinwheel type like on the website. I see you are making 1- 4" round intake, using a pinwheel you will need 2 that size to get the same number as half the opening is always closed even when it is all the way open. But I like having a intake on at least 2 sides anyway.

That makes sense, and yes I was talking about the pinwheel on the FB. So plan on 2 4 inch pinwheel. Or should I plan on 2 6inch?

You can always close them off when you have too much air easier than you can get more air flow when you don't have enough air. Also you can make better adjustsments to compensate for wind direction.

2 of the 4" will work, but 3 would be nice to get up to temp
