New build propane tank 1750 liters

Post by lucid4folli4 » May 22nd, 2017, 2:33 pm

I finally found the suitable propane tank, 1000 mm in diameter and 2500 mm in length, capacity 1750 liters.

I'm undecided, better firebox round or square ?

Sorry for my language, use google translator :)

After building 2 with round FB I think my next one will be square. I think square will be easier to build and use.

I know you don't need space but square cabinet doors would help a lot too.

For now, thank you.
I see everyone prefer square.
But round would make me rip material and money .....
I will think well before starting the work.

What do you think of a similar shape ?
With cylindrical FB obtained from a part of the tank.

I have to say mine started out like this a 12' long piece of pipe;

But later changed it to this, and I'm very glad I did.

From the functional point of view, are there differences ?

Absolutely, for example when I added the VC/WC above the FB it added 28 square feet of rack space. Also have you ever tried to put aluminum pans in a round CC? I can put 2 full sized pans in each shelf above the FB. The doors swing instead of lift, so anyone can open the door. The heat/smoke that goes into the VC doesn't even go into the calculation for the rest of the cooker so it is sorta like being free. The fire basket is better in the square FB too, because now I can have a ash pan under it for easy cleaning and no mess. If you go square doors on the tank too, you will have easy open doors without counter weights.

In my opinion the insulated fire box kind of depends on your climate unless you just want an insulated FB. If it's real cold where you plan on using it then I would insulate but if it isn't cold I would use the thickest metal available.

If you do insulate the FB, which does make it more energy efficient, I recommend 1/4" inside then you can go thinner on the outside.

I would like to use the baffle plate as drip pan. It's possible ?
Can I make it iron or do I need to use stainless steel ?

Most folks make whole thing out of carbon steel. The baffle plate does act as a drip pan, because it covers the total space under the cooking racks

:yth: Put a 2'' grease dam at the BP gap and a 2'' drain and you'll be set.
