Reverse flow hybrid with vertical chamber cabinet.

Post by AndrewPalmer71 » July 10th, 2017, 8:06 pm

Hey gang,

I am building this patio sized reverse flow hybrid smoker (see pics below). Has anyone ever placed a chamber on top of the firebox and heated it with exhaust from the horizontal cook chamber?

I could cut vents in the top of my fb, which would allow me to fine tune the temp, but I prefer not to at this time.

Also, feel free to critique the build. Helps me make sure I've covered all the bases. Thanks guys!

Yeah man its been done plenty of times.Youre better off to cut the elbow off and run a straight exhaust off the top of the CC.Then build your warming box and cut a hole (or use where your elbow is) add a dampner and add an exhaust stack to the vertical box

I feel like I'm in the Matrix, didn't we already have a lot of discussion on this thread that is now gone?

Lol. RC. The other thread is in the introduce yourself forum. I created this post after the introduce yourself post thinking that you guys would more likely see it in the reverse flow smoker forum. You answered all my questions in the other thread. Thanks again bro.

Thanks guys! And RC, I know I will. I could barely contain the excitement while I was assembling it.

Although I didn’t include a picture (give me a break) I added a layer of 1.5” insulation between the firebox and the chamber also

You can put a short stack on top with a baffle or put a vent similar to your intake near the top of the WC to let some heat out when needed.

Thanks Big T. I️ think I’ll go with the short stack. And maybe a small pinwheel damper near the bottom.

Making

I have decided to repurpose my old utility trailer to transport my now 1500 lbs smoker. To think this thing started out as what I planned would weigh no more than 1000 lbs blows my mind. Lol.

Anyway, could you guys give me pointers on how to strengthen this utility trailer to support this smoker?

Also, any other help/pointers are welcomed. Thanks!

And, how far from the axle does your firebox sit? I want to get mine as close to the axle as possible. But am worried about heat. I think I read a thread where 8” from the axle was ok, but not sure.

It's a tough call on strengthening the trailer without actually seeing it in person. You have to be careful with an angle iron trailer so that you don't have too much weight on any one point. I would probably try to run some channel iron or rectangular tubing down the length of the trailer and mount the smoker to that instead of the angle iron. The FB is usually as close to the axle as possible so that the trailer is balanced, I believe mine is about 3'' behind the axle. I believe the thread you're referring to was mentioning the clearance of the FB to the ground, 8" of clearance is fine if the FB is very close to the axle but if it's away from the axle it needs at least 12'' of clearance.

Thanks Big T. I am planning on running square tubing as cross members as you said, but needed a second opinion.

I will very likely run square tubing or additional angle iron down the sides also just to be safe.

? If I used another section of angle to make the sides square shaped, would that work the same as running square tube?
