Was finally able to put in some more time on the pit tonight. It wasn't much but got a few more things done. Got the brackets for the racks welded in and put some legs on this beast. The legs I went with are from 4x4. Gonna end up calling this the the Beast or the tank for sure.
One step closer to the big Q!!!!!!

I saw this the other day but finally got around to saying it. Those d rings are an excellent idea for hinges. I never saw anyone use them but it seems like an obvious choice I always have some laying around.
Making memories!
Current Smokers: Backyard RF Offset and Hybrid RF Offset trailer rig with Cowboy cooker and fish fryer, always room for more........
RC, I have been working on this build with a buddy of mine. He has a construction company and runs a lot of heavy equipment and uses these all the time. I original plan was to do the ole cold roll in the pipe hinge method but he was the one that suggested using the rings. I give him the credit for that one.
Well it’s been a while since I have been able to work on my smoker but I finally got some time last night to put in a few more hours. I must say that I am very pleased with the progress thus far. I got the stack on, the vents on my fb cut out along with the fb door. I also got a handle welded on and looking pretty sharp.
I should have so free time this weekend to fab up a couple of cooking grates and work on the vent damper on either side of the fb.
I am starting to second guess my first thought of using 1” thin wall sq tubing for the cooking grates because I am worried about them sagging over time. I am thinking of using 1/8”x1x1 angle instead. What are your thoughts??
So I had a little time this afternoon and got to work on the grates.
Got the top and bottom racks made but ran out of shielding gas as was forced to shut down the operation till I can get more tomorrow morning.
The racks measure 38 1/2” long the bottom rack is 23 1/4” deep the top is 20” deep I put 1” tubing braces at 12” from each side. Hoping this will give them strength to last me for years
Yep it's a pain when you are on a roll and the gas runs out. That and running out of wire halfway through a build and it's Sunday afternoon...

Exactly, it was still early in the afternoon. I was on a good roll, I had planned to get the grates done and work on the fb vents and the handle for fb door. I felt cheated because lately I’ve been so busy with work and the family and haven’t had time to work on this Beast.
Got the grates finished up today and even broke out the wire wheel to get the rust cleaned off the grates.
I also got started on the fb vent covers. This is the idea I came up with, hopefully it will work the way it does in my head and on paper.
Things are really starting to come together and I am getting closer to “Q” time.
Question for the group: is it worth the time and materials to fab up a charcoal basket for the fb or should I just fb up some type of other grate for lump coal and splits?
