Well more work accomplished today. The smoker is upright on its own Yeah!!! I got my adjustable hight front leg fabed up. I also cut the baffel plate, fitted it and welded it in. That was a doozy. I couldn't get ahold of my buddy with a plasma cutter so I cut it out with an angle grider. I then ground off all the mill scale. Wow does that suck. I cut the pipe for the stack on a 45 and and welded the two 45 degree angle welded making a 90 degree elbow

Getting closer. I got the grate supports installed and the grate built, valve hole welded up, hole drilled for the exhaust, exhaust welded in. All I have left is to fab the vent cover, firebox handle/lock, and make handles for the cook chamber and for moving the smoker. I have enough square tubing and expanded metal I might put a shelf on the front as well. My buddy suprised me and bought me the exhaust tip so I had to mount it on the exhaust. Hoping to have a fire built in it this next weekend.

Looking pretty flash...

Thanks all. It has been a great learning experience. I'm going to hate to see it come to an end. My welding is getting a bit better but still not enough stick time. Already thinking about a bigger backyard smoker. Something like 26x40 or so.

Now you're talking like a smoker builder, already planning the next one before you finish the first one :kewl:

Well I am almost there. Tonight I added the firebox latch, and air vent control. I also added a handle on the end to facility moving the smoker around. I also had to mod the cook chamber grate. It was keeping the door from fully sealing and started building a shelf for the front. The last thing to do is add a handle to the cook chamber door and attach the shelf.
I wanted to fire it up tonight but it is way to windy. So I'm shooting for saturday to finish it up and do a test fire. Once I happy with it I will paint it.

Thanks Dirtytires. Thats my plan. I want to get it burned in and tested first before thinking about painting. Currently waiting for the weather to break. It's been in the teens/twentys and blowing 20-40. Gotta love this Alaska weather.

Well the wind died down, and the temp was 31F today. I got the handle welded to the cook chamber door and deciedd to fire it up. I followed the how to build a fire in a reverse flow smoker. All went well, I was very pleased. Since this is the first firing I decided to run it hot. I used a chimney load of charcoal and then added 3 small logs. Then ened on bringing the temp up to 450 and holding it there for quite a while then let it cool down. Here are a few pictures from today. Next is to prep it for paint, season, then do my first cook.

Strange seeing all that snow when I'm sweltering in the shed in a +40C heatwave.

Good that it is holding the heat for a while. Roll on the Q-view... :needfood: :needfood: :needfood: :D

Thanks all, hoping to get it painted this week, season it, then finish off with maybe some ribs since those are fairly easy and quick.

The weather warmed up today to 41F. Built and attached the front shelf and I got the smoker cleaned. I also got it painted. Going to bring it home from my father in-laws later this week and get it seasoned. Then Saturday I am doing ribs for my belated birthday party. I am very happy with the results and want to thank everyone for all their help.
