Oh hell...who needs a fork lift FRANK??[emoji33][emoji51]

I guess my welds will hold.

So far this is the only large gap I have had because my plate was not square before they were cut. I figured it would be better to fill the gap and leave it where it won’t be seen and keep the doors square.

Thanks.
I do have a little pressure. I am having to have a shoulder replacement June 6th. I don’t have to, but I would like to have it finished by then because there is no telling when I would be able to finish it after that.

And no, I am not old, just 37. But I wrestled 18 years from 5 through most of college. Not that there is anything wrong with being old though lol

Hahaha... nice catch. But as one gets older you find you are able to achieve less in a given time frame than you used to be able to achieve. So yes, there is something wrong about being/getting old if you want to continue to fabricate/weld/do manual things.

Good luck with the shoulder reconstruction... while you can learn to use the other hand and arm. It's amazing how hard it is to do stuff with the "wrong" hand/arm when you can't use the right one. I recently fell over and injured my shoulder, just a sprain and bruised muscle, but everything was a p.i.t.a. Like trying to brush you teeth with the other hand. I did not realise how unco I was :D

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford

Yeah this will be my 3rd shoulder surgery...it is the worst thing ever. And you think brushing you teeth with the opposite hand is hard. I put my finger through the paper if you know what I mean lol. [emoji90] it will get your attention real QUICK

Archuleta family reunion smoker

Post by bstory » April 5th, 2018, 8:35 pm

Thanks guys. It is coming together great. Only problem was one sheet was not square so my buddy that cut them had 3 pieces a little off. So I have one gap that I will have to fill but it will not be seen. I will never build another smoker without CNC plans. I only have about 5hr hours of labor in this so far. Pretty easy

How many sheets in total do you estimate you'll need? I've got the plans for one and it's in the wings but I'm running around trying to find the best price on 6mm plate. I'm sure the bastards see me coming from miles away and adjust their prices upwards. :D

Archuleta family reunion smoker

Post by bstory » April 6th, 2018, 8:32 am

I used every bit of 3 sheets of 48”x120”
Only thing I was missing was the CBB13 which is the inner side of FB. I had the grate slides cut out of the plate, but it actually calls for 12g. But my buddy has a huge press break that will bend it at 90 for me.

There is a ton of different sizes of angle you will need.

bstory, I am in Australia, so that's not going to be an option :D And insulation is one of the cheapest things on my shopping list so far. Apart from consumables etc.

Looking at the plans I was leaning towards 4 sheets of 1200mm x 2400 mm x 6 mm, so that is about right. I might get five sheets just in case. It never goes to waste.
I do have a 1200 x 2400 cnc plasma table (home built) that will make some of the build easier. Although a lot of the parts look mainly square so I might just use a hand held plasma and straight edge on those parts.

Ok just thought I would offer. Yeah I hate grinding after cutting. It was so nice having them cut. How did you build a Cnc plasma table? That would be so awesome.

Being in Australia I hope you love Ford/Holden Falcons.

Should be done by summer...at least cruising. They are never “done”

Ohhhkay... any chance of getting a set of metric plans and cut files when they are ready? That certainly would make my fab a bit easier :D

No problem, thanks for the offer.

The plasma table came about by getting the remains of a oxy/acet profile cutter that came out of a TAFE (college). I fabricated the frame and only used the rails and gantry. I bought a CandCNC (Texas) controller and a hypertherm 45 plasma with machine torch. It took a bit (a lot) of tinkering to get it all sorted and as the gantry runs on rails (like a train) it can be out by a small bit (±1 mm over 2 meters) but for the kind of stuff I do, not really a problem. I built a water bed for it as well to cut down the smoke/plasma dust. That was a really good thing. On some stuff I still get a bit of dross, but discovered that a wire wheel on an angle grinder cleans that up better than anything else I've tried.

Yep, in Oz the Holden vs Ford rivalry used to be really fierce. Nowadays as just about all the cars are rebadged imports it is not quite so serious.

Nice collection of cars there.

I would think so, that way the insulation will be sealed up.

Looking good so far.
