I had put some ospho on the pit before heading north.

Realized I wasn't going to get a paint sprayer and it was best to get some cans.

Would there be any benefit to increasing the throat size to my pit that would decrease the time to get to temp? I use a cactus burner to start my fires and don't think it takes that long to get to temp really but would it allow more heat to flow in and be of some use?

I find that it runs steady with both intakes open but the calcs call for a little less than full open. In the pic you can see that I moved my drain pipe closer to the firebox with the idea that any grease would flow out easier heated up. Like the build gods have mentioned l though most of the grease burns away on the BP.

But, when I moved the drain pipe did I effectively reduce my throat size?

Follow the calculator exact for the throat size. Your ‘heat up’ time is more about building the proper coal bed/ fire than actually warming up the pit. Mine sits in 120 degree sun during the summer but it still takes me an hour to get the fire ready and stable before adding meat.

Moving the drain pipe has no effect on the throat unless you blocked part of it in the process.
