I have been assigning materiels to parts, as it does a mass calculation and you get an idea of what. Thats the colour it gives for brass lol. The weight of the bottom half is about 170kg.

I put an inlet above and below the fire, I think the oven would benefit from a draft being drawn above and through the fire. Whereas smoking and stove would want to draft through the ash pan. This is theory, but supported by looking at commercial designs.

Hopefully I have enough adjustment on enough bits to get her drafting one way or another.

Having more adjustments than needed is way better than not enough. Your doing a great job and I can't wait to see it done!

Thanks Towtruck. Best efforts I think I might be able to get it done before Christmas. I am a few weeks away from drawings being done, then will be going out for tender. After the quotes come in, it usually takes me a few weeks to get over that, then I order.

Got the essential Y-piece, this now provides a missing key dimension between the centre points of the two flues. Outstanding drawings are the back box, and the doors, then I have to add all the detail. This wont be the same as the smoker cook chamber, this will be mild steel internally, so it has to first bolt to the outer skin, then I will weld the seams which will be stainless to stainless, I cannot weld the mild steel to the stainlesss, there is going to be some pretty complex interfaces to achieve the box inside a box inside a box I required.

I am looking forward to the build, whilst drawings are essential, there are no way near as fun.

Still progressing the drawings, getting there but will certainly be another weekend at least. Going to make my own handles for the doors, I made one quite recently for a fire rake.

The design is pretty much done now. I just need to go back through and put tabs on the bits I will weld, then sort the bolting for the outer skin. See the light at the end of the tunnel now, and expect to have a package to quote for with another weekends work. Few picture of progress below:

Spend most the weekend finalising all the interfaces. I am pleased to say the drawings are pretty much done. I have not done the little plates for the baffles, but that will only take a few minutes, and I spent enough time clicking now.

Not a lot to show as the design hasn't changed, you can just start to see little notches and tabs, and bolt holes etc appearing. Will be about 135 profiles cut to go into the fabrication with 91 drawing recorded.

Been exhausting and keen to start working with my hands again. Will get the drawings out for quote to laser cut them and go from there. Next job is cleaning the workshop. I always do that just before a big job, and it needs it.

I sure hope so, I built this one for life. I owned a couple grills this is my first proper smoker. I have watched all the commercial stuff I buy detoriate quickly, it is nice to have something you know is solid, and will last you a long time.

I really tried to make it functionally driven, I am hoping each feature performs equally as well and doesn't turn into a comprise.

It is winter here now, and get about 8 hours light, but I hope to get it done for Xmas

You can tell your good at your job. If it works as designed you might have a nich market you could cater too. I would love to have a log cabin with one in it as primary source of heat and cooking. Gotta work on getting some place to have a cabin first though.

Ha ha. I appreciate that. I do like work, I mean actual work. It has been a while since I picked up a welding gun there though. This is how I keep my hand skills alive.

Work is good, but is real high pressure sometimes, so I cant always work in the evening, as I need to chill sometimes lol. I have half of December off, and hope this will see me done by the 19th, been a while coming now!

Don't quite have the money for the second half of the bbq just yet. I got a quote back for the parts, but decided best to get to the new year before I proceed.

I have a few bits to work on, on the smoke chamber so will be closing those outs.

One of which is finalising the gas strut mounts. Machined some brackets today and a little shaft.

So, some time has passed, and as always life gets in the way of a good project. I will struggle to find the money to finish this as per the drawings for some time. So I decided to use the 15mm road plate that was going at work, to make a firebox until I can get it done.

It has 10mm plate top and bottom, but that's all that was available. Should be able to get a firebox out of this quite quickly.

I am going to cut all the openings once it is together. The plate is so thick it felt easier to work it that way.

Exactly that. I can’t spend anything on it, so working with what I can beg lol.

That’s why it is only a firebox. The oven is complicated, and it is better to wait for the money.

Temporary might turn out 2 years. After assessing a few things. I have 3 children. 10 months, 2 and 3. Turns out this cost a lot. So I have had to delay the final build now, but I think I can get there in 2 years. The drawings are what is important and there done - which means it will get finished one day

This way you can see if the smoker works and get to know how it works.....your work is exceptional so it will get finished and will be the way you have drawn it I'm sure. I have a hunch this temporary fire box may influence changes to the master plan so it's a good idea either way.
