Now I just need to clamp them together and drill through and bolt. Want to avoid welding the two halves together if I can avoid it.

How much space do you have now between the grate and the BP?

About three inches now.

Should be enough?

You can count on DC, yes that should be fine. The ideal is about 4 inches (in my opinion) but three will do just fine.

The only problem now is my floor is too short and too narrow. I hope i have enough 3mm steel left to make a new one, or I might have to weld a new bit of steel to the side of the old one, which wouldnt be as nice. Hmm. Decisions.

I also have to weld some triangular gussets into the corner of the throat caus currently theres no space for the seal and it would leak badly.

Having fun here!

Just cut and installed the new floor, and its in two parts. One is very slightly smaller than the other so it can slide under the other plate, so that gives me some adjustability of my end gap.

The other thing I was going to ask, someone mentioned not having the chimney down at grate level. I can cut it back but its a one time mod, I dont think it would be too easy to extend it back down if I screwed up. With that in mind, how far should I shorten it?

Im going to do some chickens in there tomorrow to see how its fairing. I need to dig around and find some bolts to join the firebox to the cooking chamber, but other than that job, its done and ready to cook. After I know it works il paint it all up.

I now have 75kg (165 pounds) of cocoshell briquettes too :-D

Hi everyone,

It's running a treat. Holding temp perfectly with Cocoshell briquettes in a circular minion setup. Got a few chickens in there.

It's running at 235f. Sitting very level showing no signs of slowing. Very happy.

If the chicken tastes as good as it looks i'll say you hit a home run with the conversion.
