Re: My First Smoker Build (24 x 46 RF Smoker)

Post by Elmacho » January 7th, 2016, 11:16 pm

This is gonna be a big update... I took some time off work for the holidays and to work on the cooker. Have made some good progress over the past couple weeks.

First I built out the cart and welded on the caster plates.

Image

Then it was time to get to work on the cooking chamber and baffle.

Image

Had to cut and thread the pipe, never found one at Lowes.

Image

Before welding the pipe to the baffle, I laid the baffle on the cooking chamber to mark where the pipe would exit out the bottom. This made it a lot easier then trying to measure and guess.

Image

Once that was good, we welded the pipe onto the baffle and tested the fit.

Image

After we were satisfied with the baffle fit and had it tacked into place, it was time to trim and weld on the ends.

Image

Image

Before we welded on both ends we did remember to make a center line on top for the door so we would know where to measure for the door once it was all welded up.

Image

Once everything was tacked up, it was time to start running beads.

Image

and run beads...

Image

and run even more beads... All together about an hour of running beads.

Image

Once both were done and cool, it was time to grind them and prep them for assembly

Image

with some measurement, and checking and rechecking, they are finally one piece now. The scale says about 520 lbs...

Image

Next week, we will get it mounted to the cart, and hopefully get the doors cut / made and begin the final odds and ends. Should not be long before I fire it up.

Well was able to get everything together this weekend. Ran out of Oxygen, and of course on a Saturday.

Thought of every place that might have Oxygen, alas nothing. Before the Oxygen ran out, did get a couple lines of the CC door cut.

Flip it upside down to attach Patio Cart.

Image

Welded the Cart to the Smoker. Had to measure 3 times and level 4 times to ensure the Cart would not be warped causing the wheels to not sit flat on the ground.

Image

Welded grease pipe in place.

Image

I changed the dampers up slightly once I saw Frank sold these nifty Slide style damper kit. I opted to spot weld them on. All in all they turned out good.

Image

Image

Moment of truth... Flip this beast over and see it in all its glory!

Image

Marked and started cutting the door, unfortunately the cutting torch ran out of Oxygen...
Turned out ok though, was able to work on the side frame pieces of the CC door. Luckily my Brother in Law has a Steel roller and we began rolling the side flat bar for the CC doors. Hopefully this works in welding the frame to the door.

Image

Thats it for this week. Hopefully in the upcoming week, this thing will be headed home.

Project update. Well all good things must come to an end and so endeth the use of my brother in law's shop. He is in the middle of moving to a new location so I decided to bring the project home. Good part is I no longer have to drive 2.5 hours to work on it, but I do miss all those lovely tools.

Looking good. Bummer you lost use of the shop. A well set up and tooled shop will cut down on time but now the neighbors will KNOW that you made it yourself!

I have something similar to what your building, and looking at the pictures makes me want to ask what are you going to do with the opening from the FB to WC above? I say that because in my experience it needs a damper and a shadow plate at least.

Making memories.
