Very nice hinge. I was wondering how the hinge would work from your earlier pics. Now I know. Very clever.

When you posted the first pic of those hinges, I have to admit I had no idea what you were going to do with them. I don't know why but I was at a loss. The idea is very unusual but very nice.

Awesome work dude, those hinges are ingenious, love the clean lines outside the CC. Hopefully they don't take up too much room in the CC & interfere with the top rack. :kewl:

Thanks for the comment. I got the idea from a smoker I saw at Cabelas. It took about 5 or 6 iterations of a template to get it close alot of guessing. The down side is they will interfere with the upper cooking rack but I have a plan to compensate for that. Im going to make the upper rack somewhat narrower and have the slide supports cantilevered off the back wall of the CC.

The handle is fiberglass core with some sort rubber plastic outer. Not wood.

Yeah its like an asbestos but I'm sure its not asbestos material with a self adhesive strip. You just cut your desired length peel of the backing and stick it on.
That is a flat high temp gasket .It's not a hazard no one sells anything asbestos anymore. I use it on my annual boiler tear down/ cleaning that and the rope of many different sizes use some of the high heat RTS it should stay if you get it on a clean surface.

So had a bit of a break from my build but all good now. I got my chimney cut to length and made the damper. I got the hinges all fine tuned and finish welded on the chamber door including stops when the door is open. Pretty pleased with how the door fits the chamber. I'm still waiting for my FB material...that's what happens when you count on a buddy to help you out. You wind up on his schedule not yours.

So I have a couple questions about the baffle plate. What's the best dimension for the distance between the cooking grate and the baffle? Will 1/4" thick plate be sufficient or can I go thinner?

Thanks to all for the great comments it is nice to have support and be able to rely on the knowledge and talent amongst the fellows on this forum.

1/4'' is the minimum recommended thickness for the BP and 2''-6'' is the range from BP to bottom rack. I make my BP in the 3.5''-4'' range if possible but anywhere in the range is fine. The chimney looks great!

Thanks squiggle and rod

My next task will be the door damper. I plan on doing a 3 opening butterfly damper. Yeah I know I don't have the door material yet but I have my chunk of 1/4" plate out so I might as well get it cut and ready. Hopefully I get my FB material by the weekend.

Thanks to all for the great comments....

So today I got my butterfly damper cut out and cleaned up. Also welded the damper to the chimney. Very pleased with the results. I have a question about the damper opening area. Pit calculator requires a FB opening area of 15.55 sq. in. The dimensions of the butterfly damper are:
Openings 2
Radius of opening 3.5"
Center diameter 1"
Width of opening 4.125"
The opening area from the calculator comes out to 15.12
The actual damper after cutting is somewhat smaller than what is required. Is this going to be ok or should I make the openings larger?

If it calls for 15.5 and you're at 15.1 or close to it you'll be fine. The only time it requires that much air is getting up to temp, once it's hot the intakes will barely be open.

Very cool hinges! I saw those in a pellet smoker at the local grill store and tried to emulate them my self. I modeled it but couldn't figure a way to make it work with the thickness of my CC walls.

Finally....I got my material for the FB. Got started this morning and here you can see the throat cut out in the back and the two sides tacked in place. Then trial fitting of the fire brick. I plan on putting the brick on the bottom full across but only part way up the sides and back. There will be no brick on the top or door. I might insulate the door with some k-o-wool if I get ambitious. I'm going to make a slide out charcoal basket with rails near the top of the box.

Wow what a dream to work with new plate that's been water jet cut. The precision is like each piece was machined to size. The plate is 1/4"
