WHOA!!! I was looking around online about linseed oil yellowing, and I happened to come across a video of a guy that was saying he won't use linseed oil in his videos, because the rags can catch on fire. I thought I better go out and look, I left my rag doubled up, and sitting on the smoke gatherer.

Sure enough, it was hot, and when I pulled it off of there it was all burned up!

Yikes! Was it on there during a smoke? I've heard the same. don't store them balled up in a bucket. Dont store them at all - one time use rags.

No, there was no fire involved. I just folded it up after I got done putting on a coat. Set it down on the smoke gatherer and went inside. Went back out about a half hour or so later, and it was all burnt up.

Got it thanks, I am leaning that direction. Thanks for the info on the rag, I would have never guessed that would happen

Seen that happen before. I always burn them when I've finished using the rag.

Same when I've been using Danish oil too, burn it with fire!

Nice shop, btw. I’m working out of the “3rd stall” at home. Jealous.

I’m lucky enough to have 2 facilities to work out of and my boss is doing the welding for me ! One of them does aluminum fabrication and the other steel.

Quick question, if I use diamond plate for the BP what side should I put down? I may not be able to dig up a smooth sheet.

Diamonds down. It will be impossible to scrape/clean off your grease and drippings otherwise. I wonder if the diamonds will affect airflow however.

:yth: I have used diamond plate a few times for the BP and haven't had any issues. My current smoker has a piece of 3/8'' diamond plate for the BP and it performs flawlessly.

Thank you for the quick responses. I was worried it might affect the flow.

Update on this. I use Walrus Oil for some woodwork finish in the house - butcher block, cutting boards mostly. I did some clean up from yesterday’s Super Bowl cooking and left the rag on the counter. 2 hours later, the kitchen is full of smoke. The rag is smoldering. Threw it on top of the chimney on my rocket stove I use for burning twigs/etc and woosh ... 2 hours on the counter!! It’s a mix of coconut oil, beeswax, mineral oil and vitamin e. Insane! Glad I didn’t do this last night before I went to bed. Super paranoid now.

Lucky one Dave, I did say a few posts ago I always burn them immediately after finishing. The last one I used for Danish oil went up like a good 'un the moment I hit it with a lighter.

A little more progress tonight, cut the firebox door air intakes and throat!
A little test fitting and may get to weld it up this week!

That's a big project! Are you going to put it on a trailer?
